Join us for lunch with three of America's top General Counsels: Freddie Mac's Bob Bostrom, the Washington Post's Veronica Dillon, and American Capital Strategies' Sam Flax (largest publicly-held private equity firm in the US). Wed, May 28, at Il Mulino in DC. Sign up here. Thanks to great sponsors Studley and IMC.

The stunning Potomac view Tuesday night from the roof of the new Swedish embassy at the Georgetown waterfront (aka House of Sweden) made it the natural place for Bisnow on Business and Group Goetz Architects to honor 15 Visionaries whose work has shaped our city. The second annual event drew a crowd of 500 who dressed sharp, depleted the bar, and applauded honorees like the entire Nationals-owning Lerner family, "Godfather of Go-Go" Chuck Brown, and-this being DC-a few good lawyers.

Okay, so Visionary James Dyke (left) of McGuire Woods's Tyson office wears glasses, but the award isn't about eyesight-the former Virginia Secretary of Education and Chairman of NoVa's Business Roundtable has long championed schooling and commerce. Now Chairman of the UDC Board of Trustees, he's on the hunt for a new President. Fellow honoree Steve Porter of Arnold & Porter has throttled back from partner to senior counsel, which he tells us means he does "expensive consulting." He fills out his time on the board of the National Council for the Arts, dispensing NEA grants.

A bevy of Arent Fox attorneys showed support for partner and Visionary Joe Fries (far right), baron of the DC real estate development scene for 47 years (not that we're counting, Joe). From left: Eleanor Zappone, Mike Leahy, Sandra Buchko, Kimberly Wachen, Gerry Mitchell, Ed Rich, and Mark Alberta. By the way, Mike has a young Tiger Woods on his hands. His son Nicholas started picking up clubs at age two; now six, he plays respectable rounds with Mike at Chevy Chase Club.

DLA Piper's international pro bono affiliate New Perimeter is launching a project to teach law students and professors at Addis Ababa Law School in Ethiopia over the next two years. New Perimeter director and white-collar specialist Sheldon Krantz, who heads off with an initial group in June for a two-week stint, tells us Ethiopia has fewer than 5,000 lawyers (some might say that's a good thing) in a country of 80 million and a legal code drafted by outsiders who knew little of the country's needs. He's also been to Kosovo over 20 times in the last four years to help establish an independent judiciary. He travels so much he's immune to culture shock, and it sounds like he won't be bothered by the weather, either: The Ethiopian climate, Sheldon says, is similar to that of his once-home city of San Diego

The 34-lawyer office of Cleveland-based Thompson Hine has quietly plucked four partners from top-line firms in less than a year, part of a lateral-growth strategy aiming to boost the DC office to 75 attorneys. We gathered the recruits: international trade group members Matt Nicely (formerly of Vinson & Elkins) and Lynn Fischer Fox (WilmerHale) with employee benefits and litigation practitioners Tess Ferrera (Kilpatrick Stockton) and JC Miller (Saul Ewing). Thompson Hine ranked fourth in overall lateral satisfaction among U.S. firms in a survey conducted by Major, Lindsey & Africa last year, and DC partner-in-charge Chuck Freed tells us he's now targeting government attorneys for the international trade practice.
