UDC TRUMPS
HARVARD

Join us for lunch with three of America's top General Counsels: Freddie Mac's Bob Bostrom, the Washington Post's Veronica Dillon, and American Capital Strategies' Sam Flax (largest publicly-held private equity firm in the US). Wed, May 28, at Il Mulino in DC. Sign up here. Thanks to great sponsors Studley and IMC.

US News just ranked the nation’s clinical programs, and one DC law school finished 13th—tied with Stanford and six spots ahead of Harvard. If you guessed UDC, you’re right. Dean Shelley Broderick tells us all UDC students have to do at least 750 hours of clinical training before getting diplomas (50 hours as 1Ls, 350 hours as 2Ls and 3Ls). All told, the school provides 70,000 hours of legal services annually for DC’s underprivileged.

Shelley, former director of the criminal defense clinic at Antioch, tells us that already this year students have won judgments of $350,000 and $200,000 in two separate landlord-tenant cases. A third group represented a fired DC public-school employee who blew the whistle on school food that wasn’t refrigerated properly (they got the employee’s job back, plus back pay). Despite the success, UDC isn’t tops in the city—Georgetown (where Shelley got her JD in '78) and American placed first and second. Shelley’s message to them: “Look out; you should feel the hot breath of UDC on your necks!”

PLAY BEER!

Goulston & Storrs real estate group partners Cynthia Paine and Dennis Moyer made like bleacher creatures at Goulston’s “Evening of Beer and Baseball,” hosted in their K Street office last week.  Fifty G&S attorneys and friends gathered to congratulate client Clark Construction on its on-time completion of $611 million Nats Stadium. Cynthia is a bigger fan of beer than baseball (Stella, Bass, and Guinness especially), though she did make a game last week and says she loved the stadium’s Metro access. Dennis tells us the real estate market is certainly slowing, but that projects—like one client’s acquisition of mixed-use developments in SE—are still moving. Then he knocked on wood, just in case.

SUPREME RETIREMENT

Perhaps you recognize the attorney on the left? Now that’s she’s retired, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor can spend her Mays doing something other than churning out opinions before the end of term. We found her Saturday night with American College of Cardiology CEO Jack Lewin at the DC Ritz’s “Evening with Larry King and Friends,” a gala raising $1.2 million for the CNN gabber’s Cardiac Foundation and featuring performances by SNL impressionist Darryl Hammond and Grammy winner Seal. Also in the room was Larry Flynt, in whose favor Justice O’Connor voted in Hustler Magazine v. Falwell. Somehow we doubt they discussed the jurisprudential subtleties of the case.
