On Friday night at Columbia Country Club, the American College of Trial Lawyers (DC edition) introduced their 2008 nominees. Just like a Cooperstown induction, all the stars and legends were on hand.

This is an exclusive club: fellowships in the ACTL are by invitation only, and Fellows never represent more than one percent of the total lawyer population in any state. A few that have made the cut: former Secretary of Transportation, co-author of the NAACP brief in Brown v. Board, and O’Melveny & Myers senior counselor Bill Coleman; Williams & Connolly duo John Buckley and Greg Craig; and Caplin & Drysdale’s David Webster. We caught them toasting to Greg’s recent successes—for one, he’s a senior advisor to Barack Obama. Also, on Thursday he led a successful bail hearing in Santa Ana on behalf of Broadcom CEO Henry Nicholas, indicted on stock-option back dating and drug charges. Since we’re starved for election news, and Greg didn’t pull us aside to say otherwise, we’re announcing right now that he’s on Obama’s VP short list.

ACTL DC committee chair Stan Mortenson chats up longtime friend Barrett Prettyman of Hogan & Hartson. Word of advice: if Barrett tells you a story, shush up and listen. We were treated to a tale of Bobby (Kennedy) and Fidel (. . . Goldberg? Barrett didn’t say) that was related with such nonchalance we could have sworn we also knew RFK personally. Stan was more on message and told us the College is actively trying to shed the image of being a men’s club and feature DC’s diverse talent.

Conveniently for photographers, sometimes diverse talent stands next to each other. We found Baker Botts’ Joe Caldwell, Bracewell’s Carol Bruce, Zuckerman Spaeder’s Francis Carter, and Moffitt & Brodnax’s Pleasant Brodnax. Pleasant was one of the honorees and has just one more test (review by the national College) before he’s a fully fledged Fellow.
