ONE LAST ROUND

No, our headline does not refer to beers. With winter closing in, we took in one last round of golf yesterday at the Kenwood Golf and Country Club on River Road, where plenty of firms came to duff it up for the Archdiocesan Legal Network’s 5th Annual tourney.

We caught event co-chairs Kevin Fitzgerald (Troutman Sanders’s DC managing partner) and John Walker (Verizon associate GC) in the clubhouse afterwards. The best-ball scramble netted ALN more than $110,000, a record figure for the event. John tells us that Verizon GC William Barr (former U.S. AG and also a CIA vet) has just stepped down to make way for Randy Milch, promoted from within, effective October 15th. If your phones acted funny yesterday, it’s probably because Verizon’s 150-attorney legal department sent three teams out on the course.

Howrey was a flagship sponsor of the event, and its big guns were a solid 9-under with four holes to play when we caught up with them. From left: Matt Moore, John Briggs, Matt Wolf, and Mark Schechter. Mark did 18 years in DOJ’s antitrust division, where he worked on the Sherman Act case against Microsoft. Hmm, guess that means he’s not a PC.

The Dow Lohnes crew: tax associate Sara Church, employee benefits partner Paul Lang, corporate partner Kevin Mills, and higher ed associate Jay Vaughn. Their firm just celebrated its 90th anniversary with a blowout at the Library of Congress. It must make starch-collared clients happy to hear that even when Dow Lohnes throws exuberant parties, they take place in a library.

Vinson & Elkins’s Bill Lawler took a moment from his round to pose with fellow ALN board member Monsignor Peter Vaghi. (We might have heard Bill asking for divine intervention on a difficult putt.) Msgr. Vaghi is also a J.D., which makes him (a) a true glutton for punishment, and (b) a perfect candidate to follow in the footsteps of Cardinal Hickey, who founded ALN in 1989 to provide pro bono legal services on an ecumenical basis to the poor. He also realizes the cost of billable hours and says ALN appreciates the time devoted by its 500 lawyer volunteers (all denominations welcome) even more than the funds raised.

DLA Piper’s Christina Antelo and Adrian Copiz, right, teamed up with client Leo Diaz of UPS and Hyatt Chesapeake Bay’s Frost Williams. While his dad is a judge in Wisconsin, Frost was wise enough to steer clear of a legal career. His resort offered up a two-night stay as a door prize, and despite stuffing 100 business cards into the drawing, we didn’t win.

These guys aren’t lawyers, but they design the offices you work in. From left: Peris CEO Jeff Pellegrino, Cassidy & Pinkard’s Gary Helminski, and Gensler architects Jeff Barber and Raffael Scasserra.  Peris and Gensler are teaming up on the design of Baker Daniels’s 35k square-foot interior at 1050 K St., to be completed in December. Next up for Gensler: an 80k SF expansion of Troutman Sanders’s space at 401 9th St.

The people who made it happen: ALN Director Jim Bishop, Troutman Sanders event manager Renee Stake, Howrey’s Glenda Thomas, Hogan partner Elizabeth Meers, who doubles as chair of ALN’s advisory network board, and Monsignor Vaghi. For the sake of our good karma, we’re establishing a “clergy exception” to our rule against one person appearing in two pics.
