We've discovered the key to assembling the area's top in-house counsel: Italian food. General Counsels Veronica Dillon of the Washington Post, Bob Bostrom of Freddie Mac, and Sam Flax of American Capital Ltd. cheerfully turned out at Il Mulino to headline last week's second Bisnow GC lunch. After networking with Bisnow readers, they earned their meal (though had little time to eat it) by opining on hot issues facing corporate counsel. Did you miss it? Just imagine the aroma of veal-stuffed ravioli as you read.

That's Bob in the blue shirt (way too sharp-looking for DC; must have gotten his fashion sense as NY managing partner at Winston & Strawn). Bob uses Gibson Dunn for litigation and employment law, and sure enough some of the firm's partners were on hand: Daniel Plaine, John Olson, and Stephanie Tsacoumis, who just stepped down as DC managing partner. Economic tea leaf: She tells us Gibson hasn't reduced the size of its summer class, and has 34 recruits toiling away. ("Toiling away" when they're not sailing.)

That's Sam on the left; he told the crowd that his American Capital, a private equity firm based in Bethesda, has $10 billion on its asset sheet. We caught him chatting with top brass from event sponsor and international tenant-rep king Studley: Vice Chair Lois Zambo and EVP Tom Fulcher. Studley has at one time repped 80 of the Amlaw 100. (Hey, why not the other 20?)

Michael Cutler, a corporate M&A type with Covington, shared an ice tea with June Kress, Exec. Dir. of the Council for Court Excellence. We had no idea how appropriate this picture was until June told us CCE founder Charles Horsky was a partner at Covington when he started CCE back in 1982 to promote court reform.

Running with the corporate counsel theme, we snapped this of Fred Krebs, head of the Association of Corporate Counsel (at 24,000 members, the world's leading in-house association), and Ilene Reid, Exec. Dir. of local chapter WMACCA (Washington Area Corporate Counsel Association, but you knew that). Ilene is this month heading on family vacation featuring both town (Boston) and country (White Mountains).

We make an exception in this picture to our usually strict "no two pictures of the same person in one issue" rule to show Covington's Cutler again, because we didn't want to miss one of our great panelists, Washington Post Company GC Veronica Dillon (who came from their Kaplan side), and great sponsor and software maker Sudhakar Shenoy. Sudhakar, one of the best know figures in regional tech (a former chairman of the Northern Virginia Tech Council) runs IMC, which, among other things, makes software to help law firms organize, manage, and retrieve all their emails and other information. (How's that for a plug, but, hey, doesn't everyone need that these days?)

John Ford, a former lawyer, is Bisnow's Managing Editor. Got a story tip? Pass it on to john@bisnow.com.
