Keep those nominations coming for the “30 Under 30” awards.  No muss or fuss—just a couple sentences about your nominee and why they deserve this august honor:  30under30@bisnow.com.

Actually, it could be any of a number of stars-in-the-making at Covington who follow in the footsteps of its once and future lawyer who became NFL Commish (he’s back now as “senior of counsel”). But Peter Zern is one player on their deep bench who came to our attention this week.

At first, we almost mistook him for a first-year associate catching up on his sports news—but no, he’s the young partner who just made the cover of Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal for its annual “Forty Under 40.”  We caught him in his office a couple days ago, right before he jetted to LA to glam it up with future sports moguls (Dan Snyder is past honoree) at a Beverly Wilshire banquet tonight.

At 34, Peter is old enough to remember the Rubik’s Cube, but his is an NHL version. He’s repped the hockey league on TV deals.

In his first assignment, straight out of Georgetown Law, Peter helped the NFL establish a $1 billion credit facility. SportsBusiness singled him out for advising the NFL on loans to finance new stadiums for the Patriots, Cowboys (coming ’09), and the Jets-Giants (’10).  You can also thank him for the MLB Channel’s wide launch in ’09—affiliation deals have it poised to appear in well over 40 million homes.

Modest though he is, Zern fully expects to get the biggest cheer at the ceremony.  “Whenever I’ve graduated or something, I always get a standing ovation . . . because my name comes last. My mom thinks I’m very popular.”
