NAB HOSTS MISS AMERICA

Big shout-out to great new sponsor DC United! Don't miss the soccer event of the summer: United v. the LA Galaxy and David Beckham. Sunday, June 29. Tickets on sale now!

Last night the National Association of Broadcasters and 400 guests took over the National Building Museum (now a true historic site after Hillary’s concession there) for its 10th annual Service to America Awards. Miss America presented honors, Quincy Jones took home the Leadership Award for work with underprivileged youth, and Randy Owen, lead singer from country rockers Alabama, got the Samaritan Award for Country Cares, which has raised $315 million for Saint Jude Kids since 1989.

NAB CEO Dave Rehr (right) with Will Schulte and Leslie Hortum from executive search firm Spencer Stuart. Dave tells us the dinner raised $750,000 for NAB’s educational foundation; the money will be used to increase diversity in broadcasting, which Dave made a priority when he took over in 2006.

Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro with ION Media Networks EVP John Lawson (looking very Rat Pack) and CEO Brandon Burgess. At the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show, ION Media will showcase technology that puts TV reception on cell phones. Gary tells us that CES—140,000 attendees, 4,000 press this year—has gotten so big that electronics makers use the show’s date as an annual development deadline, racing to get their latest gadgets out in time for the Vegas affair. Hey, as long as we can watch baseball games on our cell phones by 2010, we’ll be more than happy.

Okay, you got us—this has nothing to do with associations, but it’s not everyday we get a pic of Miss America, Michigan native Kristen Haglund. The 19-year-old, whose cause is eating disorder awareness, pitched the FREED (Federal Response to Eliminate Eating Disorders) Act to her state’s junior Senator, Debbie Stabenow, back in April. Hmm, maybe some of you could use Kristen in your government relations divisions?

For a last bit of fun, we allowed Gary to break our firm rule against one person appearing in two pictures. He’s just so darn sexy. That’s our official explanation anyway, which has nothing at all to do with the lovely Debbie Norville, host of Inside Edition and emcee of last night’s festivities.
