Association Bisnow
March 4, 2008

On Thursday, we ventured to The Park (the hot new club on 14th in DC) for the kick-off event of a group so cool they call themselves YHIP (that’s the Young Hospitality Industry Professionals). YHIP’s first-ever happy hour drew a healthy crowd of association types, who proved the Facebook demographic is down with old-school social networking (you know, meeting people face to face instead of over a Blackberry).

YHIP is the brainchild of (right to left) Dan Sherman of Transportation Management Services (which just provided shuttle service for 100,000 attendees at the National Home Builders Association’s Orlando convention, in case you wonder what they do); Jasmine Webb of PeopleTech; and Megan Shannon, Meetings and Expos guru for the National Apartment Association. (Megan is perhaps better known for her reign as Miss Freedom Fest in Reading, Pennsylvania, back when she was five.) And Gene Thomas of Freeman, left, sponsored the event. Dan says that YHIP plans to go monthly with its happy hours—and if things work in DC, it’s on to New York and Chicago.

Over by the bar, we found Jennifer Comer and Asleigh Hunt of CTIA, diligently preparing for life at the wireless association’s Vegas trade show on April 1-3, where Ashleigh assures us they’ll be clubbing by night. CTIA expects 45,000 attendees and has blocked rooms in 26 hotels. (Hint: if you’re looking for these two, check the craps tables at the Venetian.) You may be seeing CTIA pop up on your television; they just shot a national ad in LA

Mike Moulton from TMS poses with Desirée Abelda and Lauren West of the American Political Science Association, who just returned from a bi-annual meeting in San Jose. The conference for poli sci professors was themed “Teaching and Learning,” but we can’t remember anything else Desirée told us about it—we were busy imagining a lecture hall full of conference-goers falling asleep and drooling onto their notebooks. Lauren had a good time, though: the Marriott staff gave her cupcakes to celebrate her 26th birthday.

Kim Allison, Ryan Barth, and Meredith Brown do CVB duty for Baltimore, Indianapolis, and Austin. Proving that there’s an association for everything, Meredith told us she just booked the American Mosquito Control Association.

Meredith Parkins, East Coast Account Director for the Hawaii Convention Center, with Mike Dickinson of Travel Planners and Malene Ward of the National Association of College Admission Counseling. These three staff the community service committee of the Professional Convention Management Association, and have logged some well-spent hours stuffing care packages for the USO. Meredith was off to a yogini over the weekend. We’re not entirely sure what that is either, and assumed it involved yoga and raw juice and was something perhaps almost spiritual . . . until she told us it was in the Hamptons.
