| When ASAE's Tech Conference was snowed out last week, association techies improvised to create UnTech10, an unofficial alternative at the Renaissance Hotel. Thanks to a Twitter marketing push, nearly 100 showed up in-person and more than 400 participated through a live webcast. |

 |
|
With more than 2,500 Tweets using the hashtag "#untech10," the unconference became one of Twitter's top trending topics in DC, even trumping "snoverkill." Here's a few participants' Tweet take-aways:
@NFiStudios: The future of social tech for associations starts w/ culture, then thrives with agility. Aim small, Miss small.
@ewengel: socmed doesn't have rules - it has religions - need 2 provide diff spaces 4 devotees of diff sects (inc agnostics)
@MemberClicks: Focus on your members, make sure that your web & soc med strategy lines up w/ your organization's goals. Don't have 2b everywhere.
@susancato: best takeaway of the day: Make your community site THE highway, not just a stop along the way

Associations don't really own their brands anymore, says American Chemistry Council's Rob Krebs. Instead, social media allows the general public to define brands. "The conversation is happening with or without you," he says. He suggests using "listening" programs like ReputationConnect or Addict-o-matic (free) to get "a schmear of your reputation." At ACC, he found that the cyber chatter was overwhelmingly neutral or positive. Instead of wasting time trying to alter the few negative conversations, he found it far more effective and efficient to convert the neutrals and reinforce the positive buzz.

Don't wait for a web redesign, says Distilled Logic's Dina Lewis. Organizations should be consistently improving their sites. She says there's likely outdated content or needless words that could be edited to make the site more user-friendly. Also, "People don't read websites. They browse websites." In particular, the "About Us" section often goes untouched for years. She suggests taking another look to see if the section's tone or presentation could be updated.

| MEET OUR SPONSOR: THE PORT NETWORK |
| |
 |
| Among the key collaborators in launching UnTech10 was our sponsor ThePort Network, which during the conference unveiled its new think tank for best practices in social media for non-profits. Marketing VP Suzanne Carawan tells us www.socialinstitute.org is a source to download and discuss white papers like “What You Need To Know Before Launching an Online Community” and toolkits like “How to Increase Online Fundraising.” |
| |
 |
| Suzanne (here with her son on a recent getaway to the Junior Olympics—we like to show you our sources are authentic people!) tells us one of ThePort’s social media apps is for the Sierra Club’s Climate Crossroads website, allowing hikers to post trail conditions and discuss their favorite crunchy granola snacks. And if you’ve been waiting to tell the world about the road you were proposed to on, look no further than the Asphalt Institute’s FavoriteRoad.com where happy drivers can submit a photo and explanation of their favorite strip of blacktop. Want to know more? Suzanne will be on hand at our big Association Breakfast & Schmooze tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at BLT. Sign up now! |

A few of the UnTech10 organizers: SocialFish's Lindy Dreyer, NFi Studios' Elizabeth Baranik, OmniPress' Tony Veroeven, NFi Studios' Sterling Raphael, SocialFish's Maddie Grant, and ThePort Network's Adam Steinberg. We found them finally kicking back at Ping Pong Dim Sum in Chinatown after a day and a half of marathon organizing. Maddie tells us she got less than three hours of sleep preparing for the event the night before. A similar one-day social media event she organizes each spring takes three months to put together: “We thought that was fast.”

After a day of looking to the future of associations, UnTech10 participants decided to go retro. We found them busting a move at the Young Association Professionals' 80s Dance Party at RFD bar in Chinatown. Thankfully, most left the leg warmers and slap bracelets at home.
