GUIDE TO MOBILE APPS

Our next Bisnow Breakfast & Schmooze for Associations and Non-Profits: "Driving Non-Dues Revenue." All-star cast includes Pete Pantuso, Bill Hanbury, Jeff Morgan, Suzanne Carawan, and Juanita Duggan. See you Feb 17 at BLTInfo

Few associations and non-profits have launched mobile apps, but we predict they're going to be one of the hottest trends of the year. Here's a look at how some organizations are leading the way:

Monterey Bay Aquarium Foundation's Seafood Watch mobile app

Monterey Bay Aquarium Foundation's Seafood Watch

Price: Free

This sushi and seafood guide uses GPS to tell you which species in your region are eco-friendly. In addition to the sustainability rating, the app lists the consumer and market names for each species as well as habitat descriptions and health alerts. Pass the soy sauce!

Human Rights Campaign's Buying For Equality Guide

Price: Free

Find out how LGBT-friendly it is to drink a 7-Up or pump Exxon gas. This app shows you which companies to support and which to avoid based on a ranking formulated by HRC from each company's anti-discrimination protections, domestic partner benefits, diversity training, and other policies.

American Cancer Society mobile app

American Cancer Society

Price: Free

This app helps you remember birthdays of friends and families and practice putting out the candles on a virtual birthday cake by blowing into the microphone. Oh yeah, and you can donate to ACS or watch its YouTube videos.

American Heart Association

Hands-Only CPR

Price: Free

Call 9-1-1 with one touch, then perform CPR by following the how-to video. The really loud beeping helps you keep a steady rhythm.

Pocket First Aid & CPR

Price:  $3.99

Figure out how to respond to seizures or wounds with illustrations and videos. You can also store your medical and insurance info as well as emergency contacts. Now, the only real emergency is when you lose your iPhone.

The Salvation Army mobile app

The Salvation Army

Christmas Music

Price: $2.99

Instead of dropping money in one of those red kettles, you can download this and listen to X-Mas tunes.

Bellringer

Price: Free

If "Jingle Bells" doesn't cut it, this app let's you create music with the Salvation Army's trademark bell by shaking your phone . . . and donate, too.

American Humane Association's Be Humane

Price: Free

As soon as you open this app, a message pops up telling you how many children have been neglected and how many animals euthanized since you first downloaded it (cheery, we know). From there, you're a click away from checking out video and photos of AHA in action, donating, calling the org, and getting friends involved.

APPS TO SUPPORT NON-PROFITS

The Extraordinaries

Price: Free

Help non-profits by performing "micro-tasks" such as contributing or tagging photos, mapping resources, or doing research. The app could potentially be used for anything from translating an org's websites into Spanish to reviewing congressional bills for hidden pork.

CauseWorld

Price: Free

Sponsors donate money and this app lets you decide where it goes. Each time you walk into a store, you "check-in" and collect "karmas." These points can then be donated to causes such as the Red Cross, Feeding America, and the Jane Goodall Institute.

ANATOMISTS SHOW HEART

Don't rush the membership booth all at once, folks! Last year, the American Association of Anatomists began offering financially-struggling members one-time forgiveness on their dues. Seven of its 1,800 members took the offer, says AAA exec director Andrea Pendleton. Of those, three re-upped for 2010. The break on the $130 annual dues wasn't publicized until the last leg of the renewal cycle. Though it was initially adopted “on the fly” on a short term basis, AAA now plans to continue the offer for the foreseeable future. "It lets members see that the organization cares about them as more than just another renewal," Andrea says. "It's as much of a goodwill gesture as actual financial assistance."
