| We accepted an invite to a National Beer Wholesalers Association beer tasting at CulinAerie on 14th St last week. We weren't just there to kick back a few with CEO Craig Purser; we asked a few intelligent questions. Like, how did NBWA draw a record 3,700 to its September convention in Vegas? |

Craig credits off-the-record, closed-door sessions for members, which began two years ago, for helping build interest. He says the meetings have also helped create a more candid exchange of ideas and concerns. The first such meeting drew 400, but 1,100 crowded in at the April gathering with 200 still standing in the back.

The event included a book signing with Christina Perozzi and Hallie Beaune, LA-based authors of The Naked Pint: An Unadulterated Guide to Craft Beer. We asked Craig his favorite places in the area to grab a brew. He recommends Rustico in Alexandria, Cafe Belga, and Brasserie Beck. But the Holy Grail is The Brickskeller, which Craig calls an "old standby," "the motherload," and "Grand daddy."

| Tech Trends |

Mobile apps for associations are on the rise, says ASAE Chief Technology Officer Reggie Henry, who joined a tech trends panel at the Tower Club in Vienna, hosted by association management software provider Protech. He says the apps are part of a larger trend to personalize member services. The only problem is that most associations haven't collected the amount of data needed to be able to give members the personalization they expect from their tech.

More data means data integrity is critical. American Chemistry Council managing IT director Sam McMakin says associations need to have controls and business processes in place so members' names aren't duplicated and their info is up to date. Duplicated data will cause challenges when you least expect it, he says; eg: if someone is in the database twice when a PAC is formed, they could theoretically donate twice and over-contribute the maximum.

Another trend: going paperless. American Health Lawyers Association tech director Thad Lurie says it's helped his association save time, money, and the environment. AHLA used to spend $50,000 printing giant binders for its annual meeting. Thad proposed putting all the materials on a flash drive, which members could plug into their laptops, while continuing to offer the binders for $75. In the first year, 25-30% paid for the binders. (Well, of course. Etching your secret crush into a flash drive is not as fun.) Now, they go digital for all their events.
