POWERFUL WOMEN

Have members interested in Department of Energy spending? We've just announced our next Federal IT Breakfast & Schmooze: "Outlook on Energy." Sign up now!

Yesterday, we gathered some of DC's most powerful females at our Breakfast & Schmooze to talk about where women stand in business. It turned into a truly memorable event; the huge Sequoia restaurant was barely able to contain the numbers and passion.

You won't find Waldo in this crowd (but maybe Wanda). Nearly 450 women and a few “lost” men filled the Georgetown locale. This may also be our best-dressed crowd yet.

The White House Project president Marie Wilson speaks at Bisnow event

The White House Project president Marie Wilson says confidence is often what holds women back from leadership positions. Her non-profit aims to help women reach the top in all sectors, including the US presidency. We found some shocking stats in a recently-released TWHP report: Though nearly three-quarters of non-profit employees are women, less than half of non-profit CEOs are women. In non-profits with budgets of $25M or more, about one of five CEOs are women. And in salary, female non-profit CEOs make 66% of what men do—a decrease from 71% in 2000.

Rand Construction CEO Linda Rabbitt speaks at Bisnow event

Women are comfortable with each other when they believe they're a peer group. But when one rises up, the group often pulls her down, says Rand Construction CEO Linda Rabbitt, who runs the only woman-owned construction company in the DC area. Instead, she says praising and honoring other women is key to building female credibility in leadership. She encouraged telling fellow females when they've made good points in a presentation, just like men might punch each other on the arm to signify the same thing.

Ernst & Young Global Vice Chair Beth Brooke speaks at Bisnow event

A diverse group of women and men of all backgrounds and ages will outperform a more qualified homogenous group every time, says Ernst & Young Global Vice Chair Beth Brooke. Her company now has a policy of producing a diverse applicant pool for high-level positions. She says it's helped bring in more women and minorities. One of the keys to success for women, says the former Purdue basketball player, is toning at the top (and, no, she's not talking about Michelle-like arms). She means diversity has to start at the organization's top levels. And speaking of top levels, Beth is ranked #41 on Forbes' list of the world's most powerful women.

Marriott International EVP Kathleen Matthews speaks at Bisnow event

Marriott International EVP Kathleen Matthews says when she enters a board room, she still finds herself counting the number of women and minorities. The day we stop counting, the former Channel 7 News anchor says, will mean success for women's rights. Marriott happens to be one of the top places to work when it comes to diversity, and the company actively recruits and trains female hotel owners. Kathleen says a company's diversity should reflect the people they serve. For example, she points out that the first female news anchors helped boost ratings because producers finally figured out that the majority of their viewers were women.
