FOLLOWING A
LEGACY LEADER

Mary Logan followed a 40-year leader when she stepped in as CEO of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation in April. Intimidating? You betcha. We dropped by AAMI's Arlington office to see how the former American Dental Association COO is fitting in.

When you're a new leader, Mary says everyone wants to know, "What's your plan?" But she believes it's best not to rush the answer. Mary's first 100 days included hour-long interviews with each of her 34 staff members, 17 board members, and several dozen other industry insiders. The conversations resulted in a 30+ page organization assessment, which she presents to the board next week. All the while, Mary has been keeping homes in two cities: Chicago, where her husband works, and Arlington, where she's a 10 minute hop from the airport.

You're looking at an old-school suggestion box (with a real-life suggestion being read). The box is one of Mary's additions since taking on the leadership role. She's also introduced monthly staff meetings and board communications plus weekly e-mails to the executive committee. She's looked for little wins with her staff by giving them the day off after Thanksgiving and letting them choose to take off Veteran's Day or Columbus Day. Now, if only she could morph into Santa Claus . . .

VISIONARIES IN OUR MIDST

Life Pieces to Masterpieces' Mary Brown, Mary's Center's Maria Gomez, SisterMentors' Shireen Lewis, DC Central Kitchen's Robert Egger, author Allison, The Fishing School's Tom Lewis, Kids R First's Susan Ungerer, The Arriba Center for Independent Living's Cris Covelli, and Tahirih Justice Center's Layli Miller-Muro.

These aren't just beautiful faces; they're local luminaries. All are nonprofit execs featured in Allison Silberberg's hot-off-the-press Visionaries in our Midst. We stopped by a Nonprofit Roundtable-sponsored book signing at Mary's Center for grub, goodwill, and singing (think “Guantanamera” with "soup kitchen" and "Oprah" in the lyrics). Here's Life Pieces to Masterpieces' Mary Brown, Mary's Center's Maria Gomez, SisterMentors' Shireen Lewis, DC Central Kitchen's Robert Egger, author Allison, The Fishing School's Tom Lewis, Kids R First's Susan Ungerer, Arriba Center for Independent Living's Cris Covelli, and Tahirih Justice Center's Layli Miller-Muro.

Mary's Center's Maria and DC Central Kitchen's Robert catch up with author Allison. The two non-profit leaders say they haven't had the chance to read the stories written about them just yet, but we caught Robert with three copies of the book. He tells us he had a big meeting yesterday to talk about opening an LA Central Kitchen (not to be confused with California Pizza Kitchen). And speaking of the Golden State, Robert was in San Francisco just last week to accept an "In Harmony with Hope Award" for his work toward eliminating poverty in America.

Tahirih Justice Center Exec director Layli Miller-Muro

Fundraising season is in full gear for Tahirih Justice Center, a non-profit which provides legal services and advocacy to protect immigrant women and girls from violence. Exec director Layli Miller-Muro tells us they're getting ready for a week of “Pearls for Women and Girls” (Nov. 5-12), offering discounted pearls from China. At Tahirih’s annual benefit last month, Layli snagged Law & Order's Sam Waterston as the keynote (along with Cong. Jim Moran and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee). She says the actor presented her with an award more than 12 years ago for a case she litigated, and she's been holding onto his home phone number ever since.
