How Tweet it Is

Invitation to all Bisnow readers! Come join us at the very cool Lima Restaurant & Lounge this Thursday, Mar 19th, 6:00 PM - 2:00 AM to celebrate Lima's 3rd anniversary at 1401 K St NW. This special event is by invitation only, so you must RSVP here.

The usefulness of micro-blogging site Twitter.com is a favorite topic these days. (Here’s a list of association pros using it.) Which means many are still experimenting, like when National Association of Social Workers Executive Director Betsy Clark live-tweeted a trip to the White House Wednesday. We spoke with her the next day about the trip and the tweets.

She landed the 1600 Penn invite to witness the Prez create the “White House Council on Women and Girls.” NASW recently joined a coalition to push for more female appointments. (They have a dual mission of helping 145,000 members and advancing social justice.) At the event, she Twittered about who was there and also about meeting a White House security guard whose parents are social workers. Betsy’s still on the fence about why anyone would want to read her thoughts (“it must be a generational thing,” she says), and we’re not surprised she was hesitant regarding the decorum of sending tweets from a White House ceremony. We are sensing that at this White House, it’s considered okay.

CEA CEO Opposes Bailout

We were on hand Friday morning at the NVTC Titans Breakfast, as Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro chastised Congress and the Prez for spending and bailouts that will saddle future generations with untold debt. "The government's reaction now could threaten our way of life so our children can't get a house or a small business loan, and the next Bill Gates won't get funding." He also called for opposition to "card check" that lets employees form a union without secret ballot. Gary made everyone laugh with his Yoostar video where he inserted himself into classic movie scenes. You can check it out here.

They Could’ve Helped Hillary

Maybe if Hillary Clinton had bought the American Translators Association a gift for its upcoming 50th birthday, she wouldn’t have bungled that exchange in Russia last week. ATA will mark 50 years with a convention in NYC this October, with hotel rooms shrewdly reserved at a discount back in 2002. At the helm is Executive Director Walter “Mooch” Bacak, who says this year brings more value for members than ever. Their members are mostly independent contractors, so they are creating templates for them to use when pitching potential clients, like local Chambers of Commerce.

Quick, can you guess the best represented language in the association? With 4000 (of 11,000) members, it’s Spanish. Mooch graduated from a NoVa high school, then set off to study the world’s finest craft—journalism—at Mizzou. He mixed in stops at the Wholesale Florists and Florists Supplier Association and National Sheriffs’ Association before landing at the ATA. But 15 years in one place hasn’t made him complacent: He just got his law degree from Concord University and says it’s helped in everything from hotel contracts to making sure the association (staff of 11) doesn’t get bullied.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

We got some of our advisers together recently to help us identify top issues and thought leaders in the association and non-profit world—and to sample some great food at the Four Seasons’ brand new Bourbon Steak. Above, former (may we call him iconic?) NAM president Jerry Jasinowski, now sitting on boards, helping charities, and playing better tennis than ever, here with Exclusive Resorts CEO Donn Davis and Kastle Systems CEO and venture capitalist Mark Ein.

Also joining us at Bourbon Steak, Jerry Jacobs, who leads Pillsbury’s non-profit practice (and serves as GC of ASAE), told us it's been a "weird and scary" time for clients as their endowment values drop. But he also said that as a result it's been very gratifying to help them. He does that via advice on RIFs, mergers, bankruptcies, HR issues, and investment problems, among countless issues.

Argy, Wiltse accounting guru Dave Trimner has been working furiously on 990s, which start to be due May 15. He reminds us the IRS says the 990s will enhance transparency, promote compliance, and minimize filing burdens. Dave says he tells clients, “Well, two out of three ain’t bad.”

On a cultural side note: Another adviser, Argy exempt-organization leader Jeff Schragg, is Board Chair of Synetic Theatre in Arlington. Synetic means a synthesis of kinetic energy and mime. The group is known for doing “silent Shakespeare” for which co-founder Irena Tsikurishvili has won a Helen Hayes award for choreography several years running. It currently performs at the Rosslyn Spectrum and once a year at the Kennedy Center, but is looking for a permanent space.
