Lauren Bush!

We're so excited about our unbelievable breakfast event tomorrow morning, and hope to see many of you there. Read more in this first story, and sign up now!

Top model, fashion designer, and now entrepreneur Lauren Bush (niece of George W and granddaughter of George H.W.) will be joining us tomorrow morning at our latest Where do Women Stand Breakfast & Schmooze at the Willard. Often gracing the pages of Vogue and Vanity Fair for Tommy Hilfiger and Abercrombie, Lauren (Princeton ’06) has become one of America’s leading philanthropic entrepreneurs, creating the famous FEED bag which has been a runaway hit at Whole Foods and elsewhere, sending proceeds to fight world hunger. Also joining the panel will be former top AOL exec Kathy Bushkin Calvin, head of Ted Turner’s UN Foundation; microfinance pioneer Jessica Jackley; and legendary NBC-4 anchor Barbara Harrison. There’s still room to attend: Sign up now!

Nemacolin (Boy) - jumbo

We Love the Mystics!

Yesterday, we went to a lunch for Mystics partners and supporters at Mortons downtown. Team owner Ted Leonsis talked about the importance of going for a double bottom line—doing well by doing good—in everything; that success stems from happiness, not the other way around. He’s with News channel 8’s Rebecca Cooper.

GRACE (May 15) - jumbo

Team prez Sheila Johnson said every time the girls run onto the court, she gets goose bumps and sometimes even cries. She also said they play the purest form of the game. She’s with Board of Trade chair Jim Dyke.
WNBA prez Donna Orender said when the girls play, it’s all about joy, and the league’s goals are ROI – not only return on investment, but rewards, opportunity, and inspiration. She’s with Mystics CEO Greg Bibb, who told us the team is better than ever this year.
Star player Lindsey Harding said it’s thrilling to be a role model, and she plays for more than the love of the game, but also so girls know they have options. Their first home game is Friday, May 21.

Rill & Redwood!

We went to a reception at Bethesda’s trendy Redwood restaurant, and found its proprietor, Jared Rager, News channel 8’s Natasha Barrett, Jim Rill, who was celebrating his architectural firm’s move to a new office nearby, and Luxxery Medical Boutique plastic surgeon Ayman Hakki.

We met Doreen Drewry Lehr, whose book, A Girl’s War, about her experiences in World War II, is being published May 20. It recounts how, at age three, she and her brother were evacuated from London and shipped to different boarding schools for four years.

This Little Piggie!

We went to the West End’s Ritz Carlton for the Cochon 555 competition, where five chefs created a unique menu from five pigs along with wine pairings from five vineyards. We snapped Bibiana chef Nicholas Stefanelli with a 10 pound piece of pork.

Ritz Carlton’s Melissa Young and West End Bistro chef Joe Palma.

Golf!

We stopped by TPC Potomac for Rebuilding Together’s 15th annual Washingon Open. We snapped its co-chair, Booz Allen SVP Herbert MacArthur with emcee, long-time broadcaster Paul Berry.

In its next volunteer project, Fifty for Five, Rebuilding Together plans to restore 50 homes in New Orleans. Here, Black Knight Asset Management’s Chris Miller, Chamber of Commerce’s Bill Miller, Rebuilding Together CEO Gary Officer, and Republic Mortgage Insurance’s Carl Tyree.

Rebuilding Together founder Patty Johnson is flanked by William Codus and John Whitaker, who started the golf tournament fundraiser 15 years ago; this year it raised $175,000. All three were honored for their dedication to Rebuilding Together.

Mary Kate Rasa and Makeda Saggau-Sackey contributed to this issue.
