Buddies!
| |
Last night we also headed out to Herndon’s Audi Forum for the 5th annual Life is Sweet gala benefiting Best Buddies of Virginia. Former White House pastry chef Roland Mesnier, participating for the fourth consecutive year, is flanked by Oakton High School’s Best Buddies director Kevin Bennett and Life is Sweet chair Jan Rivas.

Best Buddies Young Professionals board members Alicia Sovart, Christa and James Barvinchak, and Jennifer Vasquez. This year’s Life is Sweet was dedicated to the late Eunice Shriver, a Best Buddies board member.

Chef David Guas (right), with his Best Buddy Chris Battle, was one of many DC-based pastry chefs who showcased their desserts. David’s cookbook, Dam Good Sweet, released November 1, has recipes inspired by his New Orleans upbringing.

Tequila!
| |
| Also last night, we snapped Richard Sandoval, chef/owner of Zengo (and new DC spot Masa 14—and a soon to open NYC spot) who prepared extraordinary Asian-Latin fusion dishes to try… with tequila! Who knew that different kinds of premium tequila, like wine, could be drunk with various courses of fine dining! |

Reuben Aceves is an international tequila ambassador. (Why didn’t they tell us about that option in career counseling?) He represents Casa Herradura, Mexico’s second oldest—and some say top—tequila house, and his mission is to introduce sophisticated tequila to the US.

Protecting Children!
| |
Last night, we visited the Mexican Cultural Institute on 16th Street for a cocktail reception celebrating the new partnership between Innocents at Risk and Airline Ambassadors Int'l, which educates flight attendants to observe signs of trafficking. Mexican ambassador Arturo Sarukhan is flanked by wife Veronica Valencia-Sarukhan and Innocents at Risk founder Deborah Sigmund.
| |
Alonzo Pena, DAS in Customs Enforcement, and Sandy Fiorini, who’s spearheading efforts to get American Airlines to incorporate training for its 19,000 flight attendants to recognize trafficking, spoke about the need to protect children around the world.

Special Assistant to the President Kareem Dale and Epoch Times’ Alessandra Gelmi. One victim is trafficked over international borders every minute. Innocents at Risk has established partnerships with all the relevant government agencies; Administration representatives said they’re now working hard to prevent exploitation.

Innocents at Risk has its big fundraiser this Saturday, the Capital City Ball, at The Washington Club, which has nothing to do with this picture, but we loved the mural along the staircase.
