Michelle & Jill!

Don't miss a great concert for a great cause next Wednesday, Nov 18. Pink Jams DC, featuring The Justin Trawick Group and Memphis 59. Support breast cancer awarenessListen, then buy tix now.

We were at GW’s Lisner Auditorium yesterday afternoon for a special Veterans Day event with Michelle Obama and Jill Biden.

Michelle says Barack’s administration has called for the largest Veterans Affairs budget increase in 30 years. Calling on citizens everywhere to engage in service to the country, Michelle issued a special challenge to GW students: if they clock in 100k service hours by this spring, she’ll speak at their commencement.

Food Fight!

DC’s top chefs battled it out last night at the Ronald Reagan Building Iron Chef style to benefit DC Central Kitchen at the Sixth Annual Capital Food Fight. Emmy award winner Ted Allen (host of Food Network’s Chopped) and Alchemy Caterer’s Carla Hall (Season 5 Top Chef finalist) were judges.

Michelin three-star chef Eric Ripert of NY’s famed Le Bernadine and DC's West End Bistro served as a judge with Anthony Bourdain of the popular travel and food show Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.

Sweetgreen’s Nate Ru and Nic Jammet flank two-time defending champ Barton Seaver, chef/owner of Glover Park’s Blue Ridge.

ThinkFoodGroup chef/owner Jose Andres entertained the crowd with a play-by-play of the competition and hugs Bourbon Steak’s Michael Mina who’s announced as the 2009 champ.

Mitchell + Bob

We met renowned home furnishing designers Bob Williams and Mitchell Gold at Chevy Chase’s Bloomingdales last week at a cocktail reception: Home Is Where the Heart Is. Mitchell told us he was orginally a buyer at NYC’s 59th Street Bloomies, and is thrilled their linens are featured on the same floor he worked 30 years ago.

Washington Capitals’ Bruce Zalbe and Siemens’ Shelley Stratton.

Bloomingdales’ Heather Guay organized the event with Washington Humane Society’s Tara deNicolas, and 10% of the proceeds were donated to Fashion for Paws. To help: www.washhumane.org.

Antiques!

To kick off the 55th Washington Antiques Show, we visited Mazza Gallerie’s Neiman Marcus last week to see Mottahedeh, a 75-year-old design firm that’s made china for Presidents, specializing in reproductions like this dish of George Washington's. Here: Neiman’s Dianne Bachman and Mottahedeh prez Wendy Kvalheim.

Mottahedeh designs in the Antiques Show are based on The Society of the Cincinnati Museum’s 1785 collection, represented by Ellen Clark, Emily Shulz, Lindsay Borst, and Jenna Chaojareon.

Heroes!

Many things make DC a special place; one is Children’s Hospital. Lynn Hardesty and Kate Kiernan are the two honorees for this year’s Festival of Heroes at the Bethesda North Marriott this Saturday. Lynn, who’s celebrating her 20th year at Children’s, told us that with the help of her dedicated team, the hospital implemented a new program: art therapy. Kate, a 16-year-old Stone Ridge sophomore, battled – and defeated - promyelocytic leukemia last year, and is now back in the classroom and on the tennis court.

Each year, Festival of Heroes honors one courageous patient and one outstanding doctor, nurse, or volunteer who fight childhood cancer at Children’s. This pic of 2009 co-chairs Deidre Adkins and Allison Portnoy, 2007 honoree Paul Adkins and 2008 honoree William Portnoy was taken at last year’s event. It’s one of Children’s most important annual fundraisers; tickets are still available: 301-565-8528.
