Parties for Great Causes!

Join The Scene Bisnow and Italians in DC at Eye Bar, 1716 Eye St, NW, for The Italian Party!  Friday, Oct 23, 9pm-2am. Peroni models, drink specials including the Negroni, and, of course, Italians! RSVP

Last night, we braved the rain and headed downtown to three parties celebrating worthy causes. First stop, the Newseum, for the 2009 Treasure Our Troops Gala, benefiting ThanksUSA (Treasure Hunt Aiding Needs of Kids and Spouses of those serving the USA). It was founded four years ago from an idea of two sisters when they were 8 and 10.

Rachel and Kelsi Okun of McLean got the idea during a 2005 family vacation. Since then, ThanksUSA has awarded 1,750 scholarships totaling over $5 million so military family members can pursue educational opportunities, winning praise from President Bush 41 and 43 and Michelle Obama.

NBC’s Michael Jack and NBC TODAY co-host Natalie Morales flank the girls’ mom, trade guru Deanna Okun. Many corporations have signed on to say ThanksUSA, including American Airlines, which will fly wounded troops in a 747 to Las Vegas on November 11. The Venetian has donated rooms for the troops, who will see shows by Wayne Newton and Blue Man Group, also donating the show’s proceeds to ThanksUSA.

Legendary songwriters Monty Holmes and Leslie Satcher, who’ve penned hits for George Strait, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, and Vince Gill, headlined. They’re with Leslie’s husband David Allen, who produces their shows. The duo will perform at the Grand Ole Opry on November 9 with proceeds going to ThanksUSA.

Keynote speaker, Army Chief of Staff General George W. Casey Jr. (right), here with major sponsor, Blavatnik Family Foundation’s Peter Thoren, and Michelle and Elisabeth Bond, praised ThanksUSA for supporting those defending our freedom.

Great Gala!

Also last night we went to Mellon Auditorium, where the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) held its 5th annual Unmasking Mental Illness Gala. We snapped B Michael couture’s VP Mark-Anthony Edwards with the Washington Ballet’s Pat Skantze, and her husband General Larry Skantze, who flank B Michael founder B Michael, who donated a suit to the auction.

The NAMI team: Exec director Mike Fitzpatrick, communications director Katrina Gay, and medical director Ken Duckworth.

No Lies!

We found Congressman Joe Wilson behaving himself as we joined the Veterans Airlift Command for a reception last night at Bobby Van’s Grill to raise funds to provide free air transportation to wounded vets and their families. We snapped Congressman Geoff Davis, Captain Wayne Waldon, who’d been flown to a hospital from overseas when he was injured, VAC founder Walt Fricke, Joe Wilson, and volunteer pilot Ken Krech.

Oklahoma Congresswoman Mary Fallon with Mortgage Investors Corp’s Wes Bailey. MIC is the largest lender to vets and contributed $100K to the cause. Veterans Airlift makes 3000 flights a year.

Fashion!

We stopped by L2 Friday night for the debut of the Mirza Mperial Spring/Summer 2010 collection and snapped Washington Nationals catcher Jesus Flores with The Beck Foundation’s Emily Nolan.

Hiba Bittar Hakki, Behnaz Hadjiesmaeiloo, MoKi Media's Dannia Hakki, and Mirza MPERIAL designer Taimur Baig.

More Fashion!

We went downtown to the Grand Hyatt last weekend for the first annual Fashion, Beauty & Lifestyle Expo, DC50’s hot new event showcasing the latest trends in beauty and style, and snapped BET producer Angel Elliott and Evolution Look founder Paul Wharton.

Among the beautiful women walking the runway was Saleisha Stowers, season 9 winner of America’s Next Top Model.

Celebrity Apprentice star Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth gave a seminar to young women on how to advance their careers. She’s flanked by Georgetown students Hannah Klusendorf, Rona Chen, and Margaux McGrath.
