This city’s gastronomically greatest event of the year happens next Wednesday, July 15, created by Washingtonian and lavishly produced by Hargrove (which does inaugural balls) at the National Building Museum.

We snapped Washingtonian publisher Cathy Merrill Williams in her office at L and 19th, looking for the very best Washington restaurants. Actually, she and her staff have found them: 60 biggies like Central, Citronelle, and The Source, culled from Washingtonian’s own Top 100 restaurants and Readers Favorite lists.

Cathy and her marketing colleague Jen Haber tell us they’ll surpass last year’s record crowd of 1200, which will include many of the region’s celebrity chefs. As a media partner, we’re trying to save our appetite and not eat anything for the next week, since tickets include unlimited food and drink. A portion of the price goes to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For tickets, see ad to right.

Tonight, DC’s professional tennis team, the Washington Kastles, starts its season, so last night we went to West End’s Hudson Restaurant & Lounge to meet our World Team Tennis players. Owner Mark Ein and his team: Leander Paes (won his third French Open doubles title last month), Rennae Stubbs (played the Williams sisters in the Wimbledon doubles final), Olga Puchkova (trains in College Park when she’s not in Florida or on the road; was #32 in the world), coach Murphy Jensen (Tennis Channel host and French doubles winner with his brother Luke) and Scott Oudsema (was ranked #1 in the world in junior tennis doubles and beat our own Elliott Bisnow at the US junior championship quarterfinals).

Senator John Breaux and Hatfield Advisory Services’ Fred Hatfield said they’re excited about this season, which opens tonight with Venus Williams, fresh off a Wimbledon doubles win and singles runner-up.

Becky’s Fund teamed up with the Washington Nationals on Friday night to end domestic violence. Everyone pinned on the yellow and green ribbon, and we snapped Becky’s Fund founder Becky Lee with GVPedia’s Matthew Christian Davis.
