The FAA is growing fast, and you have air traffic controllers to thank. The implementation of the next generation of ATC relies heavily on technology like GPS tracking and digital routing. They’re more like “air traffic managers”, agency CIO Dave Bowen says.

Speaking at this morning’s FedSources breakfast at the McLean Hilton, Dave (a licensed pilot who flies a vintage Navy fighter) says the new system will reduce delays, increase safety, and decrease fuel consumption. He says the agency has been doling out dollars with the Systems Engineering 2020 contracts that include some of the largest small business set-asides in US history and will be sending out a request for information for identity management solutions shortly.

FedSources’ top brain Ray Bjorklund (who’ll be facing Englund, Icelund, and the Netherlunds in the World Cup) says that Congress has been kind to FAA, exceeding its FY11 budget requests for things like airport improvement and facilities modernization, making it one of few agencies not to see drastic cuts. However, Ray says the FAA plans on cutting back heavily on contracted services (going flat over the next few years) and relying more on insourcing.

Health IT Moving Target

|
Yesterday morning, we were proud media sponsors for the NVTC B2G Committee’s look at in vogue healthcare IT. CGI’s Dr. John Loonsk. here with Patton Boggs’ Karen Smith Thiel, says the federal government has yet to give a clear definition of meaningful use (maybe because they’ve yet to experience it themselves) and that’s causing all sorts of problems for the contracting community—it’s not easy to develop healthcare tools without knowing what the standards will be. “We’re put in a situation when we don’t want to cast-in-stone solutions that may not be relevant once meaningful use standards are set.”

Kim Barnes, Director of the Virginia Office of Health Information Technology, says Virginia is becoming a pioneer in the implementation of electronic health records. In fact, the Tidewater region is part of a nationwide pilot to connect healthcare facilities with the DoD/VA interoperable health records systems. She says three competing healthcare systems will start a live exchange of information at the end of July.

SO LONG, FAREWELL

|
With that being the final B2G Committee event this season, we’d like to thank them for their partnership. All the recent topics—Green Technology, Recovery Act, Small Government Contractors, Social Media, Critical Infrastructure Protection and Cyber Security—were fascinating and timely. Above, NVTC B2G Sid Chowdhary with committee sponsors Market Connections’ Cathy Cromley, Dutko’s Matt Schrader, and Albo & Oblon’s Seth Berenzweig.
