Young & Old

Three of America's most prominent leaders in media, education, and philanthropy headline our Bisnow Breakfast & Schmooze June 17 at Sequoia: Katharine Weymouth, Michelle Rhee, and Katherine Bradley. As usual, low prices, sky-high quality. Sign up now!

Last night was Mentor-Protégé Night at Maggiano’s in Tysons, put on by NoVa’s Young AFCEANs. We spent 20 minutes debating whether we were a mentor or a protégé, before scrapping the thought and heading to the bar.

DNI DCIO Greg Gardner
One guest of honor, DNI DCIO Greg Gardner, recalled his career path (speakers focused on life tips and avoided meaty topics like upcoming RFPs). Our favorite story: he discussed his time in the Army, spending an entire summer driving around listening to the likes of Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, and the Allman Brothers. And here we thought that music was outlawed by West Point.

AFCEA International President Kent Schneider with AFCEA’s Rachel DeAngela, Becky Nolan, Rachel Eisenhower and Theresa Vitek
It’s Charlie and his Angels! Actually, AFCEA International prez Kent Schneider with AFCEA’s Rachel DeAngela, Becky Nolan, Rachel Eisenhower, and Theresa Vitek. Oh, and AFCEA really is international: Kent just returned from one of the organization’s conferences in Istanbul and also dropped in on the Greece chapter.

AFCEA’s Helaine Cooper, HyperSpring’s Chris McKee, Web World’s Alex Bustillo (he’s half Irish, but you’d never guess), K4 Solutions VP Vinay Raman and Infinitive Federal’s Ryan Cox.
Our dinner group: AFCEA’s Helaine Cooper, HyperSpring’s Chris McKee, Web World’s Alex Bustillo (he’s half Irish, but you’d never guess), K4 Solutions VP Vinay Raman, and Infinitive Federal’s Ryan Cox. We heard these guys talking of a possible change to business cards for government contracting: They say that the days of handing out a one-pager on the company could be gone, with cards featuring a company's program numbers on the back. Alert your neighborhood Staples Copy Center.
GAP Solutions Justin Levin, FedSources Diane Greenbaum, Lockheed’s Sonia Schmidt and FedSources Nick Barbato.
GAP Solutions Justin Levin, FedSources Diane Greenbaum, Lockheed’s Sonia Schmidt, and FedSources Nick Barbato. First off, we love Sonia’s Elle Woods-meets-Vito Corleone outfit. Not bad for someone with a doctorate in engineering, busy working with the electronics inside airplanes. And Diane asked how she could get in our humble publication. Just keep doing what you're doing, Diane.

Atteloir CEO Steve George
Yesterday in Germantown, we met Steve George, CEO at Atteloir, Inc, which designs and manages video teleconferencing centers (from large comm centers to mobile units) and other visual information solutions, primarily for DoD and DHS. The 60-person operation began as a consulting firm for the Army’s Electronic Multimedia Imaging Centers, supporting the migration to digital communication tools. Steve now has ambitions to triple the company’s size in five years.

Atteloir's Mark Cook, Steve George and Greg Nugent
Here’s Steve with ops director Mark Cook and project assistant Gregg Nugent. Atteloir marked its 20th anniversary last month. Steve tells us they'll "do anything from a room with a pane of glass that can show multiple images to creating and integrating a classified, complex teleconferencing system with multiple plasmas and communication devices." We'll keep that in mind when football season rolls around.
