Here’s a great sign the economy is turning: This time last year, TARGUSinfo, which powers Caller ID services and verifies online buyer identities, was doing roughly 4.5 billion transactions a month. Now, close to 7 billion.

TARGUSinfo CEO George Moore

In Vienna, we met CEO George Moore, who says the 220-person company powers Universal Caller ID to 86% of all US cable & VoIP subscribers. (Which explains how they knew we were coming. That and the appointment we made.) They also use their attributes for online merchants like PayPal to verify a person’s contact details. “We see if the phone number and other info matches our records in real time, so we can help clients avoid fraudulent purchases.”

TARGUSinfo CEO George Moore

It’s hard not to love George: He grew up in Ireland (his wife is from Northern Ireland) and came to the states to study at GW. He previously was an EVP at National Decision Systems, a demographic and target marketing company based in San Diego, before co-founding TARGUSinfo in ’93. True to his roots, George says he is a connoisseur of single-malt scotch (there are apparently 137 varieties) and having family and friends over for delicious Irish meals like haggis. (Let’s all say ‘mmmm’ together.)

Bitz and Bitz

SkyBitz VP Craig Montgomery

Ready for a new acronym? We bring you GLS (Global Locating System), brainchild of SkyBitz, a Sterling-based company that grew out of DARPA eight years ago. VP Craig Montgomery tells us GLS can track your non-powered assets (things like truck trailers, expensive machinery, military supplies), without transmitting latitude and longitude like a traditional GPS: “Instead, our system decodes the signal on our servers, so even if someone stole the signal, they wouldn’t know what it means.” (To be fair, we lent our folks a regular GPS and they didn't know what it meant.)

SkyBitz Craig Montgomery and Craig Malone

We snapped Craig with SkyBitz product guru Craig Malone, making this our first all-Craig picture (not pictured: Craig T. Nelson, Jenny Craig, and Craig Newmark from Craigslist). A neat part of SkyBitz: The device you place on your property can run for three to five years on eight AA batteries. Even more, the system is two-way, so a user can instantly add alerts (say if an asset goes out of a certain area) or reporting standards. SkyBitz cut its teeth primarily in the trucking market, but is now looking to expand globally.
