PRIVATE EQUITY: IT'S BAAACK
| This Thursday, the NVTC Business to Government Committee hosts an event on growth opportunities in federal government contracting. Topics include the 8(a) program and SBA Mentor-Protégé and Joint-Venture programs. March 11. See story below. |

| The days of private equity firms sitting on their gigantic pile of money are over, according to a study of tech CFOs done by BDO Seidman. Earlier today we sat down with BDO mid-Atlantic tax chief Wayne Corini, who says PE M&A has picked up after the doldrums of ’09. |
| |
He tells us the study predicts stronger, but more managed, growth for tech companies this year: “It’s not like the late ‘90s, but it seems private equity firms have finally lightened up and are rejoining the market.” A Silicon Valley guy by nature, Wayne just got back from a trip to Vegas (he says he won—and he still has his tie, so we believe him) where he took in some NASCAR.

| NO TRAVEL |

Here’s a good company for those who have memorized every airport code (Quick: ORD), Excellera Consulting, a place that doesn’t make its employees travel for government work. “All our employees are local, and if we get business somewhere like Atlanta, we’ll start a new office,” says partner Doug Sampson, the drummer for Iron Maiden whom we met earlier today at his McLean office.

Here’s Doug with Burton (like the snowboard, for you cool kids) White. Doug says the company stays technology agnostic, but has centers of excellence around Microsoft and Java to name a few. It does most of its work for the government (Doug heads DoD sales) but also has commercial clients like Marriott. Doug grew up in Maryland and made previous stops at EDS, EMC, and, he tells us, a bunch of companies that went out of business (he’s their good luck charm). He loves to camp and this summer is taking five weeks off to tour the country’s great parks with his family.

While you were navigating the slopes of DC recently, a number of fed folks were living it up in Vail at the annual Federal IT Summit. Conversation centered on the new fed environment for investment and the integrator community (not to mention the plethora of powder). Pictured here dining at Russell’s are Stifel Nicolaus managing director Tom Peltier, Clinton Rubin’s Brad King, Systems Software Consortium CEO Jim Kane, Alliance Solutions prez Harold Youra and son Ryan, Citizant CEO Raymond Roberts, conversationalist extraordinaire Andrea Young, and INPUT’s Kevin Plexico. Not picture (perhaps on the slopes or behind the camera): SRA VP Al Mink and Dendy Young.
