LET'S PLAY TWO
| Just four days to our big Roger Baker event this Tuesday. Please note two changes: The program will start at 7:20 AM and go to 8:30 (he has to get to the Hill for testimony); and due to a surge in sign-ups, we've changed the venue to the Sheraton Premiere on Route 7 in Tysons. Sign up now! |

| Yes, there’s snow on the ground, but we’re in the mood for a baseball style double-header, so we sat down with two Deloitte healthcare heavy hitters at the company’s magnificent new Rosslyn office. |

We bet you had no idea that Dr. Phil was working at Deloitte. (They get everybody.) Actually, this is Dr. Wade Horn, former Asst. Sec. at HHS, now director of Deloitte’s State Government sector, focusing on issues related to Health and Human Services. Wade tells us he’s seeing a big push for enterprise services such as web portals where citizens can apply for a variety of HHS services. Wade grew up in New Jersey and was a professor at Michigan State when he followed his wife, who got a new job, to DC.

No matter what happens with the gigantic healthcare reform bill, Wade says pieces of reform will move forward, including the use of health information exchanges and a focus on financially stabilizing Medicaid. A trained clinical child psychologist, he worked at Children’s National before joining the Bush 41 transition team and later taking the job at HHS, overseeing more than 60 federal programs and a budget of $47 billion. He stays busy outside work with his wife and two adult daughters, a black lab, and a power boat.

You probably remember Mike Cowan as the 34th Surgeon General of the Navy (you know, from the Navy SG poster you all had in your childhood bedroom). He brought his 33 years in the service to Deloitte in the merger with Bearing Point and is now CMO of its federal healthcare practice. Mike gave us a look ahead:
- The knowledge gap between patients and doctors will continue to shrink thanks to the Internet. (More than 70% of people have researched medical conditions.)
- Social media will become of greater importance as patients share info on medical experiences (think RateMD and PatientsLikeMe.com)
Mike tells us if he were still practicing he would require patients to use personal health records (Microsoft or Google offer them free) that follow you wherever you go: “If you get surgery in Iowa, the doctor will put in that info, and it cannot be lost or corrupted.” Being a Navy man, Mike loves to sail, but he’s currently between boats, so he spends his time motorcycling the back roads near his home.

BREAKING UP – KIND OF
| |
The competition between Cisco and HP took another turn earlier today when Cisco announced it's booting HP as one of its privileged partners so the company would not receive confidential Cisco product roadmap details. On the flip side, HP is not rejecting Cisco as a partner and will continue to make sure its products work with Cisco. Who needs the Olympics for drama?
