BEHAVE YOURSELF

One week from today: Our next Breakfast & Schmooze, starring Veterans Affairs CIO Roger Baker, 7:15am, Fairview Park Marriott. Crazy low price. Incredible networking. Sign up now

Joe Smith of McLean-based law firm Smith Pachter McWhorter is a panelist at next week’s Bisnow federal contracting schmooze, with VA CIO Roger Baker. We guess he can't wait either because he’s got some strong views.

He says the federal government continues to make life challenging for contractors by regulating the industry to the point it becomes difficult to do business. For instance, Joe tells us that the government now requires contractors to adopt a code of business ethics and conduct: something major government contractors had already done, but a surprise to many small businesses. “There's always a new wrinkle being added,” he says, “but unlike other business, in federal contracting the customer can put you in jail, so always be careful.” To hear more from Joe, sign up for next week's event!

THE PERFECT STORM

Mayra Ruiz-McPherson

Our headline isn’t referring to the past week—rather Mayra Ruiz-McPherson, a blizzard of social media talents who sent in the picture below of how a real techie handles the cold stuff. Here’s Mayra on a trip to Turks and Caicos a snow drift outside her Charles Town, W.V. home. Mayra tells us she is a social media strategist and digital marketing PR whiz and spends her time in the Web 2.0 trenches when not meeting with clients. Send her a jacket on Twitter at @ruizmcpherson.

INNOVATION HOTSPOT

PointAbout co-founders Sean Shadmand, Scott Suhy, Isaac Mosquera, and Daniel Odio

DC will always be a fed town, but that doesn’t mean all entrepreneurs are banished to the hinterlands of NoVa and Maryland. Last month, the gang at custom iPhone app-maker PointAbout (above, co-founders Sean Shadmand, Scott Suhy, Isaac Mosquera, and Daniel Odio) moved to a new office at 1410 Q Street in NW that they plan to make a technology lighthouse for the District’s tech scene. “We’re putting a piece of San Francisco in the heart of DC,” says Daniel. He tells us part of the space will be used to let the community hold free events. They are also renting desks to tech entrepreneurs who want to get in on the action.

The guys switched spots to confuse us, but there’s a good chance there’s an app to help us. Daniel tells us PointAbout just launched AppMakr, which lets users build custom iPhone apps themselves (the site’s made 3,600 to date and counting). The company’s made apps for Burger King, Volvo, and AMC’s Mad Men, along with some government stuff they can’t talk about. The company has grown from the four guys you see up there to more than 20.

While we were at 1410 Q Street, met Michael Goldstein, DealPal honcho, whose company bundles services with products for electronics. Your new DVR can come with Netflix on Demand already installed. Daniel, who cut his teeth innovating the real estate market, says 1410 Q will lease space to emerging companies like his and also has desks available on a month-to-month basis.
