| This morning we learned the Marine Corps is looking to revolutionize the boots soldiers wear in theatre, so there’s opportunity coming for all you footwear makers. (Nike isn’t actually involved, but nowadays, it seems everyone wants in.) Just do it. |

LTC Arthur Pasagian said there will be a full and open competition at the end of FY10 or early FY11. “While we want to lighten the loads of our soldiers, we also want to help how that weight is distributed.” So we guess Chuck Taylors are out. He spoke at Worldwide Business Research’s Soldier Technology Conference at the Crystal City Hyatt Regency.

Lockheed Martin’s Keith Maxwell, who leads new initiatives in the company’s military exoskeleton development, says the average soldier carries 97 pounds (in 120 degree heat). To help lighten the load, Lockheed is creating HULC, a wearable battery-powered titanium robot that moves with the soldier, holds the brunt of the load weight, and senses and reacts to the operator’s movement.

We know you’re curious what this thing looks like. It can load up to 200 pounds, not including its own weight, and uses a 250 watt battery, allowing the soldier to use it for several hours per day for a few days before it needing a recharge. The only thing, Keith says, is they’re still working on jumping: “Maybe we could do jets or a fan, but then you’re getting into Iron Man territory.”

Office of Naval Research’s George Solhan says the load for Marines hasn’t changed much since the 1960s, but the gear looks cooler. In order to help, he says the OVR is developing a Virtual Warfighter System that will equip soldiers more like a SWAT team. He wants to "enable the squad leader to mediate what we’re going to carry" and how support services can provide excess needs. The conference continues through the end of the week.

Network Solutions’ Shashi Bellamkonda met up Steigman Communications’s Daria Steigman and Shonali Burke, IABC DC prez and blogger at WaxingUnlyrical.com, at the January IABC meeting at the Bethesda Hyatt. A fun moment if you were there: The crowd of 60 sang Happy Birthday to Shonali and turned the event into a fundraiser for Kids with Cameras via Facebook's Causes application.
