Bringing Sexy Back
| Special thanks to great sponsor of today's event—Pillsbury! The Tech law experts. |
| |
| We don’t use “sexy” much here at Tech Bisnow (that’s more for our friends at The Scene Bisnow). But how can we resist with the DoE after CFO Steve Isakowitz, keynote at our Bisnow Breakfast & Schmooze this morning at the Sheraton Premiere, described its mission these days as being up there with the Manhattan Project and the Apollo program? |
| |
Steve tells us DoE has pumped more than $400 million into ARPA-E (think DARPA for DoE) to study things like liquid metal grid-scale batteries, biofuels from sunlight, crystals for LED lighting, and enzymes for carbon capture. We assume that makes sense to you. If it does, Steve says contact Matt Rodgers (he heads Recovery Act spending) or, if you're a small business, Joe Garcia or the agency’s SBIR program.

About 170 of you joined us. (We’ll be doing a Federal IT event about once a month; stay tuned.) Interesting tidbit from Steve: A big Cleveland Browns fan, he DVRed last week’s win over the Steelers and made his children watch it knowing the Browns would win.

Steve with our wonderful sponsor Joe Fagan of global, heck maybe even intergalactic, law firm Pillsbury (we hear they just opened an office on Tatooine). Joe says that DoE has become the venture capitalist of choice for clean energy firms, as the agency is investing billions. He’s an expert in all things energy, including clean tech and smart grid. Seriously. Test him: joseph.fagan@pillsburylaw.com

V&F Office Products’ Joel Hutcheson, Northwestern Mutual’s Gary Carlson, Agilex Chief Scientific Officer Darren McKnight, and US High Speed Rail Association's Eric Peterson. Darren, the former CTO at SAIC, says watch for big companies to start cutting off business units (like Northrop and TASC) to avoid conflicts of interest.

Dell Perot’s Michael Jordan and Intercom Consulting & Federal System’s LeBron James (actually that’s Judson Johnson). Judson tells us Intercom does a lot of work within the State Department. And we had to ask Michael about his famous name: “He stole it from me!” the elder Jordan says.

FGS’ Gina Narin and Robert Altiero with Deltek’s Dave Scott. Gina tells us FGS does “everything IT” mostly for DoD, while Dave is on the program management side at Deltek, which just announced the purchase of mySBX.

The gang from TRAX Int'l: John Kenney, Dennis Krupp, and Doug Tyler. John tells us TRAX is one of the leading companies in building Lynchburg into a new hub for data centers and green technology. And Doug just joined the company (unofficial start date: yesterday.)
