Virginia Virtualization

Our next Fed IT Breakfast & Schmooze: "Outlook on Energy." Tues, Dec 15, at the Sheraton Premiere. Featuring DoE CFO Steve Isakowitz, a former exec at Lockheed and Booz Allen, now guiding the energy purse. Sign up now!

Virginia is undergoing one of the largest state virtualization projects in history, Tech Sec Len Pomata told an invite-only DC Rainmaker breakfast at the Tower Club yesterday morning.

At the head of the table, Len says 39 of the state’s agencies have been virtualized (after having only two done as of the summer) and they're completing 10-12 a month, aiming for 90% complete by March. Another issue: pushing broadband into rural areas, which should help Virginia's higher than average infant mortality rate.

The statuesque Len, center, with Rainmakers prez Nancy McCarthy, Albo & Oblon co-founder and Virginia House member Dave Albo, his colleague Seth Berenzweig, and TSI CEO Marta Wilson. An inside view of state spending from Dave: The legislature probably won't approve a new gadget, no matter what it does, but we need applications to run our Medicare and Medicaid more efficiently.

Obama in the Clouds

OBM office of E-Gov and IT Deputy Administrator Mike Howell

Yesterday, OBM office of E-Gov and IT deputy administrator Mike Howell told AFCEA-Bethesda that the administration is strongly behind cloud computing and will be increasing its pilot projects next year. They will also ask (and expect to receive) funding to implement more cloud projects. And America isn't the only country doing virtualization. Mike says the CIO in the UK is trying to go from 200 data centers to 12. (How’d he know if he was serious? British humour is so dark.)

EPA’s Lisa Schlosser, EPA’s Office of Water Deputy Director Tom Dabolt, National Weather Service CIO Adrian Gardner, DOE DCIO Carl Stanton

EPA’s Lisa Schlosser, EPA’s Office of Water Deputy Director Tom Dabolt, National Weather Service CIO Adrian Gardner, DOE DCIO Carl Stanton, and GSA Office of Governmentwide Policy’s Keith Thurston panelized as part of the Energy and the Environment IT Day. Carl says to improve the smart grid an immense amount of data is needed, plus applications that can make complex decisions in milliseconds.

FERC commissioner Philip Moeller speaks at AFCEA-Bethesda event

FERC commissioner Philip Moeller says adoption of natural gas-powered cars will be slow, but it’s already started with cities buying large fleets of buses: “We probably won’t see the average buyer buying in until they see natural gas stations on the side of the highway.” (Do natural gas stations only sell natural foods? What's the organic equivalent of day-old hot dog?)
