Inside DoD Biometrics
| |
| Yesterday we were at Ft. Belvoir to see Col. Ted Jennings, project manager for DoD’s $150M biometrics program, speak at AFCEA-DC’s monthly luncheon where everyone was somehow ID’d by the way they ate their salad. (Biometrics humor.) |
| |
Ted says biometrics (eye scanning, finger prints, etc.) are used in Iraq and Afghanistan to ID the good guys as much as the bad. For upcoming procurements, he says he wants to push industry toward a specific standard base with matching algorithms to better pass information. “We don’t want people coming to us and saying they can ensure they are matching by a certain percentage.”

| Now on Schedule |
| |
After 13 years in business, Chantilly-based market research firm Market Connections got its GSA Schedule this month. “We’ve been working with the large integrators as a sub for years, but now we’re looking to work directly for the agencies,” says president Lisa Dezzutti, whose company has done in-depth market research for commercial clients, along with companies like Lockheed.

Here’s Lisa with her team. Front row: Laurie Morrow, Molly Huie, Cynthia Poole and Cathy Cromley. Back: Dave Glantz, Burns, Robin Owens, John Kagia and Lisa. Not pictured: Sarah Wholey. Lisa has been known to jump out of a perfectly good airplane (three sky diving trips and counting) while Molly just ran the Marine Corps marathon. If that’s not enough, Dave recently held a market research group while camping in the Arctic. We have no idea why.

| (Previously) In the Navy |

It’s been a busy week and we’re just catching up with all our content. Last week we joined AFCEA DC as it hosted Navy CIO Rob Carey, center, and his predecessors: CACI VP Dan Porter and DoD Deputy CIO Dave Wennergren. “The average life of a CIO is just over a year, so the fact we combined to make it 12 says something,” says Dan, who adds that each stayed true to the same battle cry: access, interoperability, and security.
Dave says transparency is the new Y2K in that no one wants to go into a meeting having done nothing about it. Rob thinks that one of the most difficult parts of cyber security is coming up with agreed upon metrics to measure success, although he says Federal CIO Vivek Kundra is trying to figure out the problem.
