| Craigslist founder Craig Newmark believes the next wave of innovation will be on mobile devices, as people find new ways to connect with each other. |

Somehow between selling your U2 tickets and bringing together the world's romantic missed connections, Craig made time to chat with iStrategyLabs founder Peter Corbett. From the Newseum, he told the crowd at FedScoop’s conference on Lowering the Cost of Government, “We’ll see a day where something will happen on your block and you’ll know instantly on your mobile device. It’s not the fancy technology that changes our lives, but its usefulness and how it applies to everyday life.”

Part of the morning panel: NRC’s Patrick Howard, DoJ CIO Vance Hitch, and NIST’s Ron Ross. Vance says the Obama administration has brought in a wave of employees familiar with social media, and his job has been to get them up and running without being a "CI-No." “It’s not just setting them up, but worrying about legal restrictions, FOIA information, and stuff like that.” We’ll give Vance a pass, but he did reference that popular social network MyFace.

The other half: State Department’s Gary Galloway, Citrix’s Rue Moody, and CSC’s Dan Mintz, the former DOT CIO. Dan says one of the problems facing information protection is a lack of agreeable metrics to gauge the effectiveness of a system. “We could tell people security would be better, but not how much better, and that’s something they want to know before investing millions.” Oh, and Gary jokes to stop asking him about Sec. Clinton. He says she’s doing fine and is a proponent of social media. “I have no idea where she is, but wherever she may be, she’s doing great.”

We owe a quick apology to FedScoop founder Goldy Kamali after accidentally forgetting to list her as a sponsor for last week’s Fiscal New Year’s Party. Goldy’s website provides the day’s federal headlines. Yesterday’s conference was the first in a series of five focused on Federal CIO Vivek Kundra’s five pillars of government.

Everyone wants to be No. 1, but when it comes to Google search optimization Nos. 2 through 10 are just as good. “Most users view everything on the first page, so it doesn’t matter much where you rank just as long as you’re on the first page,” Ogilvy’s Rohit Bhargava said yesterday at Potomac Tech Wire’s Social Media Outlook at the Tysons’ Ritz. That’s Rohit, center, with Living Social CFO Jake Maas, CRT SVP Geoff Livingston, Lotame COO Adam Lehman, and Potomac Tech Wire founder Paul Sherman.

More tips: Adam says companies mistake social media for free marketing, but the message can’t be controlled like traditional PR. Geoff says Twitter is great, but as a business, it doesn’t scale well and companies like Google and Microsoft don’t care about it. The panel agreed it could be good for Twitter to fail, because it will help spur innovation behind the online behaviors Twitter helped create. Big scoop: Adam told us his company is acquiring Google later this week. Not sure we believe him.
