The Three Amigos

Your help is needed to collect data on tech sector HR practices and benefits. Participate in KnowledgeBank's Total Compensation Survey. The last one revealed 6 of every 10 firms planned on reducing salary increases. What's in store for 2010? More info.

You have no boss, make your own schedule, and can work with your buddies. Why doesn’t everyone start a consulting shop? Here's some who did: former Army PEO EIS Kevin Carroll, former Deputy PEO EIS Lee Harvey, and former PEO Acquisition Specialist Mike O’Brien, friends for more than 30 years working at DoD, now unofficially teaming up.

We caught the trio at the Tysons’ Ritz. They’re advising clients on the Global Network Enterprise Construct (GNEC) contracts coming up for bid, the S3 recompete (we assume these make sense to you military folks) and much more. They're also working working with Paradigm Consulting's Bob Sturm in support of civilian agencies. Mike explains "We’ll basically bring each other in on projects based on expertise."

Are those notes for The Daily Racing Form? They’re all big horse racing fans and occasionally make it out to the track together, although free time has been elusive. Lee retired at the beginning of the month and for a break spent five days playing golf and then got right back to work. They all also like to travel and were together in the Bahamas recently for Lee’s son’s wedding.

COMtek CEO Dr. Joe Fergus

COMtek CEO Dr. Joe Fergus recently started a second company, nexGrēn, a spin off that will sell DiskEraser, software that wipes your hard drive of personal information before you get rid of it. "You could get lucky and nothing will happen, but if someone gets a hold of that info, they could make your life a nightmare," says Joe, whose original company developed the solution for DoD.

Leonsis at NLCHP

Washington Caps owner (and former AOL exec) Ted Leonsis and formerly homeless Caps fan Scott Lovell

We were at the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty’s annual awards dinner, where we caught up with Washington Caps owner (and former AOL exec) Ted Leonsis and formerly homeless Caps fan Scott Lovell, close friends and partners in the fight against homelessness. Scott tells us that Ted, who helped him to get off the streets and on track to opening his own small business, is his guardian angel. Ted was on hand to receive an award from the NLCHP for his 2008 documentary, Kicking It, which profiles the lives of several homeless people from different countries as they compete for a shot at the worldwide homeless soccer championship.

Elliott Bisnow in Nicaragua
For the many of you who ask the whereabouts of our own Elliott Bisnow, here he was last month in Nicaragua, delivering 200 pounds of school supplies to the Carlos Guzman primary school in El Carrizal. This week, Inc. Magazine named Elliott #19 on its list of “America’s Coolest Young Entrepreneurs” for his work creating Summit Series over the last two years, though he’s also remained involved with us in NYC.
