Happy New Year!
| We salute our great sponsor Pillsbury! As your business grows, proper outsourcing can save you serious cash. For examples, see story below. |
| |
| Congratulations to everyone who made it through another fiscal year. The binary countdown to midnight (1010, 1001, 1000 . . . 0001!) always impresses, and confuses. We’d say take a break, but the FY10 stimulus spending bonanza has already begun, so get to work! (After you read Bisnow, of course.) |

So what did we do on (fiscal) New Year’s Eve? We spent the morning with 200 semi-frazzled people at AFCEA-Bethesda’s monthly breakfast for a discussion on cyber security. Above is Bruce McConnell, Cyber Security Counselor for the National Protection Programs Directorate at DHS, who says we need more automated cyber defense systems that can react with machine speed, to match our enemies.

Distinguished panelists: DHS Chief Information Security Officer Richard Smith, National Nuclear Security Administration Cyber Security Senior Advisor Carlos Segarra, and State DCIO John Streufert. John says that State has saved 60% of its cyber budget by doing continuous monitoring studies instead of focusing on expensive certifications and education: "When someone got certified, the problem they learned to fight would evolve in a month or two."

| Mark Warner, Chris Anderson |
| |
From the Network Solutions GrowSmart Biz Conference earlier this week at the Renaissance Hotel, everyone’s favorite techie turned politician Mark Warner with Network Solutions CEO Roy Dunbar. Mark said that IT has solved nearly every major problem in this country, so it’s mind blowing it has not been able to fully solve healthcare. He also said more "radically centrist" politicians will help bi-partisanship, which is good for small businesses.

Roy knows who to get his picture with: Wired editor and Free author, Chris Anderson. Chris said there's nothing more fearful for companies than three kids with laptops. They’re nimble, can get a company going quickly, and can serve as a devastating competitor. He’s big on "freemium"—where 90% of your products should be given away, and the remaining 10%, of higher value, subsidize the freeloaders. Think Flickr and many of Google’s services.

| Be Tom Cruise! |
| |
In the futuristic thriller Minority Report, Tom Cruise uses a gigantic touch-screen computer. Who knew a few years later Kelley Hu and Kevin Yin, founders of Vienna-based SitScape would create a similar technology for your business? SitScape allows users to use disparate applications, and view multiple live web pages or docs at-a-glance, presenting all the info on dashboard-like screens instead of numerous windows. The idea came from their experience at Wall Street, where they saw the need for multiple displays to view info coming in from different markets. So far industry leaders like Hitachi and Gartner have signed on. Adds Kevin: "You could be just like Tom Cruise." (Go ahead and jump on your couch. We won't tell.)

| Meet Our Sponsor: Pillsbury |
| |
Outsourcing is much more than overseas call centers. The bright minds at Pillsbury’s Global Sourcing practice (partners Aaron Oser and James Alberg, above, are two of them) already knew that and are so good at explaining the complexities, they’ve patented a method called ValueChain that illustrates what should be outsourced and where you can save. They helped Hertz shed $400M through a series of deals and advised The Nielsen Company on a multi-national deal worth $1.26 billion. (So, get ready to learn a lot more about 18-49 year olds.)
| |
What’re the trends? Call it Outsourcing 2.0. Aaron tells us "Pillsbury has moved way beyond IT outsourcing, and now tackles HR, finance and accounting, procurement, and facilities management." And like everything else, it’s heading to the cloud: Companies maintaining their own servers often use a fraction of their capacity but pay 100% of their electric costs. Cloud computing deals can slash customers’ energy costs, keep business apps available, and leave server management overhead to providers.
