| Yesterday, Federal CIO Vivek Kundra told the Gov 2.0 Summit that he wants to implement cloud computing, "so we’re not spending millions when we could be spending thousands. |

Here’s Vivek on Jay Leno's couch talking with Sunrise Foundation’s Ellen Miller at the Washington Grand Hyatt. He says Data.gov (now with 110,000 data streams) is the first brick of transparency, and gov't needs to find better ways to use it: "You do comparative shopping to get the best price on a camera; we need to find a way to do that with things like healthcare." (WE'VE EVEN DISCOVERED THE ONLINE EQUIVALENT OF SHOUTING AT TOWN HALLS.) He calls cloud computing a disruptive technology that can change the way gov’t thinks about how it hosts technology.

A thousand people talking Gov 2.0? You had us at hello. Vivek says the government is spending $8.5 million this year and $14 million overall to overhaul Recovery.org; he sees it as game changing technology. "The history of federal IT is littered with spectacular failures, and what we’re doing with Recovery.org has never been done before, so we have to make sure everything is done perfectly."

Amazon CTO Werner Vogels, GSA CIO Casey Coleman, and Gov 2.0 Summit head honcho Tim O’Reilly. Casey, the gov't queen of cloud computing, says roughly 45% of gov't apps could exist in a public cloud right now, but caution is needed as they move toward more cloud solutions. “We don’t want to buy into a technology that will not be cutting edge in two years.” Werner says that Amazon offers a virtual practice cloud that lets customers place part of the Amazon cloud behind a firewall, making it their own.

Public.Resource.Org’s Carl Malamud says the availability of gov't data creates opportunities for business. He cites the gov't releasing GPS satellites and maps leading to a new business segment; also, he helped push the SEC to make the Edgar Database public. "There was great interest in documents that could only be accessed from a building in DC, so they weren't really for public consumption. With the Internet, people all over the world can use them." We're on board, but mainly just to see National Treasure 3: Stealing the Cloud.

Start-up blogger Eric Reiss, an expert in lean start-ups, says a number of companies begin with horrendously bad ideas, but the successful ones can find a pivot point. "So many companies start out doing something else, but the people are smart enough to find out what works. Within every bad idea, there is a kernel of truth."
