Talks Aerospace

Want some defense trends? We just chatted up Deloitte’s Chuck Wald, a retired general who was deputy commander for US European command. He joined Deloitte four months ago and is now a senior advisor for its Aerospace and Defense Industry practice.

Some nuggets from the General:

  • DoD is going through its quadrennial defense review, which will be a definer from a strategic standpoint and guide what DoD will look to acquire.

  • Secretary Gates says the Army and Marine Corps will see a boost in troops both in overall end strength and in overseas deployments.
  • There will be recapitalization bills coming whenever combat activities in Iraq and Afghanistan end, as the military needs to reset its capabilities.
  • All branches are looking at how to keep manpower costs in check but still keep pay reasonable and competitive.
  • There is a need for a new tanker system that might be split between two suppliers.
  • The B-52 used in Afghanistan is more than 50 years old and will be north of 90 when it’s retired.
  • Budgets will be flat or decreasing and discretionary funding will suffer.

In a 35 year decorated career, Chuck had more than 3,600 flying hours and 430 combat hours. He graduated from North Dakota State and received a M.A. in international relations from Troy State, plus completed coursework at Harvard and the National War College. He likes reading on international relations (who doesn’t?) and has a travel schedule to kill for, with work and pleasure trips planned to Bucharest, Dubai, Hawaii, and Paris.

Cool Counselors

Need a lawyer? And no, not for that incident over the weekend. (You think we don’t know?) We mean for actual business-type stuff. We sat down with Reed Atkin and Ben Hatten, co-founders (with Zach Girod) of DC-based Legal River, a start-up that acts as a marketplace for businesses to find legal expertise, for free.“A company puts out a request for the type of lawyer, and then firms can contact with a proposal of what they offer,” Reed says.

The idea came out of necessity. While grad students at UMd., Ben needed a lawyer for a very specialized task, and it took him two months: “I found only one, so I had no leverage.” Ben grew up in the area, went to Churchill, and is a big tennis buff (quite the player, we hear). Reed grew up near Seattle and forced himself east for grad school. Being an entrepreneur, he’s short on free time, but he’s a recovering book collector.

Hangin' with the Ambassador

TiE prez DP Vankatesh and Indian Ambassador Meera Shankar

TiE hosted a sold out crowd of 130 last week at Top of the Town in Arlington, where Indian Ambassador Meera Shankar (that's her with TiE prez DP Vankatesh) spoke about the major business initiatives of the Indian government. She also touched on the brain drain, due to progressive thinkers coming to the US to start companies; though, she’d rather call it “brain circulation,” as those who come here bring ideas back to the India when visiting friends and family.
