Save the World

One week till it's here! Bisnow’s New Washington IV. Reagan Building, July 21. Mark Warner, Russ Ramsey, Debby Ratner Salzberg, Alice Rivlin, Hunt Burke, and more. Early bird sign up!

Here’s an ambitious directive: Save the world. But that’s how Department of Energy CFO Steve Isakowitz describes its mandate. President Obama named energy as one of his three priorities, backing it up with stimulus funds nearly doubling the agency’s budget this year, in hopes of changing how the country uses energy resources to support economic growth and combat global warming.

Steve Isakowitz

Despite the challenge, Steve looked relaxed during a small break to talk with us. He says his biggest initiative is allocating $40B from Congress, including for high-risk high-reward R&D projects. He also says DOE is providing $100B in loans for new clear energy producers and $25B in government-backed loans to manufacturers that develop more energy efficient cars, as part of the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program. (Ford, Tesla, and Nissan have already taken advantage.) “Our biggest task is trying to create green jobs that can spur the economy and provide a new wave of jobs for years to come,” he says.

Brady Quinn

So why a pic of Browns QB Brady Quinn? Steve is a Cleveland-native, so he's yet to see a professional sports franchise he backs win a title (the ‘64 Browns were the last). Steve is an actual rocket scientist from MIT, who started his career at Lockheed and made stops at NASA and OMB before coming over to DOE. When not rooting for the underdog, he's busy with four kids and speaks regularly at local schools about the fun parts of his job.

SAIC Buys Another!

Yes, it seems SAIC has pocket change to burn: Last week, it bought infrastructure consultant R.W. Beck, and yesterday it announced the purchase of McLean-based Atlan, which specializes in cyber security product testing (a sector we hear is quite popular). Financial terms were not disclosed. Atlan currently does work for NIST to issue FIPS standards for government computer security.

EPA Pushes Transparency

EPA Acting CIO Linda Travers is right in the middle of the Obama administration’s transparency push. Her office has been assisting the Recovery Accountability and Transparency (RAT) board on developing a reporting scheme for American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding. She's also co-chair of the CIO council subgroup that is implementing data.gov, which now has more than 100,000 datasets and tools (not bad for just a few months).

EPA is experimenting with a new wave of social media tools that allows the Agency to better connect with citizens. Linda doesn't need such tools to find her family, though, as she grew up in Maryland. And, get this, she's a charter member of the agency (that’s 1970 folks), so she’s held about every EPA job. Although we snapped this photo, she often also acts as her family’s official photographer.

HOWEVER YOU SAY CHEERS IN GREEK

Panos Anastassiadis at Cava Mezze

We joined Cyveillance CEO Panos Anastassiadis the other evening at the great Cava Mezze Greek restaurant on Capitol Hill, marveling at his ability to pronounce the wine we drank (“Agiorgitiko”), to toast the closing of QinetiQ’s acquisition of the firm earlier this month. He just closed a great second quarter as well, so even though Panos continues on as CEO, he tells us he has felt slightly more justified in recent efforts to improve his golf game at Four Streams.
