Just hours ago, we were at the Tysons’ Ritz as QinetiQ-North America CEO Duane Andrews was given the 12th annual Boy Scout Technology Award.

Duane Andrews and Boy Scouts

Here's Duane, in uniform, recognized for his ability to start a fire using the sun, a magnifying glass, and some old stock certificates. OK, actually, the award is for technology execs who takes an active role in a community and its issues.

Marty Beard, VP Greg Dunn, senior director John Clunan, and VP Larry Reback.

Also on hand, the Sybase gang: president Marty Beard, VP Greg Dunn, senior director John Clunan, a gentleman named Kelly whose last name we didn’t record (not very scout like of us) and VP Larry Reback. Marty says Sybase is busy revolutionizing the mobile industry by turning cell phones into electronic wallets, so you can, for example, buy a Coke without pulling out a dollar. (They found places where Coke still costs a dollar? That is revolutionary!) Sybase is also a leader in SMS and MMS.

Be Like Mike!

Mike Daniels

Want to become a serial success story like Mike Daniels? In his own words: “Find the next great wave in business and attack it with the best people possible. Without either of those, you’ll fail.” That’s from last night’s TiE DC Leadership Dinner Series at Wildfire in Tysons Galleria. Mike saw the Internet wave coming, so in the mid-90s, on behalf of employer SAIC, he bought Network Solutions for $5M, not knowing the power of distributing domain names, but figuring it was the right place to be (and after being turned down six times). SAIC later sold it for $19.6 billion in stock. “In big waves, there is so much spillover it’s hard not to be successful, while if you fail in a small wave you’ll end up broke and banging your head against a wall for a decade.”

Another pic of Mike (so you know he’s important) with Pillsbury partner Matt Swartz and TiE DC prez and mPortal CEO D.P. Venkatesh. As for now, Mike says the Obama administration has created a great world of opportunity for entrepreneurs. His next big wave? “If I knew that, I’d already be investing.” He did say “ol’ fashioned government contracting” is making a comeback thanks to the war effort and Obama’s spending, while the jury is still out on cloud computing and social media.

Focus Investment Banking partner Manan Shah, YaSabe CEO and TiE DC President-Elect Amir Hudda, and SpeakerBox Communications CEO Elizabeth Shea. YaSabe is a startup that is creating a local search engine for Spanish speakers in the US and is expected to launch around April 1, Amir tells us.

KiwiTech’s Rakesh Gupta, MicroAutomation’s Suresh Gursahaney, Washington Post CTO Yuvi Kochar, and Deloitte’s Christine Vermillion

KiwiTech’s Rakesh Gupta, MicroAutomation’s Suresh Gursahaney, Washington Post CTO Yuvi Kochar, and Deloitte’s Christine Vermillion. Yuvi tells us the Post is looking into more cloud computing solutions (perhaps to keep up with bold online-only publications?) We asked Rakesh what’s going on with his company and he asked “Which one?” Suresh's company just developed a uniform 911 system for Jordan (starting with the King's house of course) and soon spreading to the rest of the country.

Anita Gupta and Customer Value Partners Anirudh Kulkarni

TechLegal’s Anita Gupta and Customer Value Partners Anirudh Kulkarni. His company completed its acquisition of Black Turtle Media last week, which will help with entering the Indian market. (Black Turtle does work with the likes of Yahoo India and others.) Oh, and his daughter was just accepted to Cornell.
