A Day With the Birds

A big shoutout to Marymount University grad programs, offering an info session this Friday, June 19. Choose from several great programs to best suit you— IT, Health Care Management, Business Administration, and more. See ad at right to register.

Hokie Hokie Hokie Hi, Tech Tech VPI, Solah-rex, Solah-rah, Polytech Vir-gin-i-a, Ray Rah VPI, Team Team Team! Too early for a cheer? OK, well we were a little spirited after spending yesterday afternoon with the Virginia Tech Intelligence & Defense Executive Alumni (VT IDEA) at CSC’s Conference Facility in Chantilly.

How much brain power is in this room? VT IDEA was founded by KippsDeSanto’s Pack Fancher and former CIA CTO Bob Flores to connect university research leaders with business and government alumni to bring solutions to national security challenges. Well, that and to talk about Beamer Ball.

You may remember Bruce Lawlor, center, as Chief of Staff at DHS under Tom Ridge. Now he’s heading Tech’s Center for Technology, Security, and Public Policy. He’s busy studying the effects of catastrophic events, namely what would happen if a fault line that runs from St. Louis to Memphis caused an earthquake (something possible since it hits 8.0 on the Richter scale about every 500 years).

Seong Mun, a medical research fellow and Director of Tech’s Imaging and Health Informatics (iHi) Center says that roughly 700 medics have been killed in Iraq. To combat that, Tech is designing robots that can perform medical procedures in the field without risking an extra human life.

Tech VP of IT Erv Blythe with distinguished alumni and Digital Sandbox co-founder Anthony Beverina. Erv just finished Tech’s “Converge Security Initiative” that brought together physical security and IT organizations for enhanced campus safety following the campus shooting in April ’07. Anthony’s company is using the economic downtown to score some top-notch talent: “Our last 10 hires were rock stars.”

Anyone looking for more schooling should turn to Saifur Rahman, who heads Tech’s Advanced Research Institute. It’s starting a new Executive Master of Information Security Assurance program next year and is on the lookout for 25 super bright students.

Good for Business?

Bob Gourley talks about transparency

Obama’s transparency push could be great for most businesses, says Bob Gourley, CTO of Crucial Point LLC, former CTO for the Defense Intelligence Agency, one of the Washingtonian’s 100 Tech Titans, and voice behind CTOvision.com. “The government is serious about accountability, so businesses who deliver quality results should be prepared for success. Conversely, firms which fail to deliver will have nowhere to hide."

Bob Gourley talks about transparency

A few other tech trends: Bob says more gov't agencies will turn to cloud computing; commercially supported open source software will continue to lead in all security metrics and grow in adoption; and, “Web 2.0 capabilities will empower users in ways that will dramatically change business models; most middle management that I run into don't seem to see this coming.”
