Healthcare Reform

A big shoutout to sponsor Stout and Teague, offering great office space at the Resources & Conservation Center, 1400 16th St, NW. Work in a building you're proud of. Green roof, views of the White House, operating costs among the lowest in the city; find more here.

As President Obama talks healthcare reform, earlier today we sat down with two tech minds who are already saving businesses oodles on costs: WellNet president Keith Lemer and Henry Cha, prez at Healthcare Interactive, a WellNet subsidiary.

Henry and Keith's Bethesda-based company created a web interface that lets execs manage healthcare spending and employees take a more active role in their coverage. "Healthcare is usually the second or third biggest expense a company will face, yet most businesses have no idea why costs keep going up," Henry says. Using different data streams (primarily pharmaceutical spending) and a simple interface, execs can see where dollars go and avoid cost increases before they hit.

If those are diplomas behind them, we'd hate to see the tuition bills. As for employees: To help engage workers, WellNet and Healthcare Interactive provides them with their own dashboard, along with incentives like gift cards and insurance cost reductions, to partake in particular programs. "The revolution in healthcare won't be in electronic medical records, but in using technology to find out how to cut costs to make service more affordable," Keith says.

Money on the Sidelines

"There's still the same amount of money available, but investors are being incredibly selective," says Rene Salas, Director of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Program (which has its awards banquet June 18). He adds, the economy hasn't dampened the local entrepreneurial spirit: E&Y had well over 100 applicants, the highest in years, and the 22 finalist companies have averaged 61% growth in the last year.

Linda!

Love that sesame chicken at PF Changs in Fairfax Corner! That's what we had at lunch today with CGI VP Linda Odorisio, a 26 year veteran of the now 26,000-employee company, which moved its US office a year ago to Waples Mill and Route 50 nearby. Linda tells us her boss, CGI president for the US and India Donna Morea, will be keynoting the Human Resource Leadership Awards in DC tomorrow night and plans to talk about the importance of corporate social responsibility. Linda says CGI's clients and college recruits ask about it frequently, and that the younger generation seems more altruistic than ever. More info.

ManTech's New Man

SAIC COO Larry Prior will take that same role at ManTech early next month, filling the position vacated earlier this year by Robert Coleman. Larry, COO at SAIC since '07, previously served as president of its intelligence, security, and technology group.
