This Morning's
Apollo Awards

A shoutout to Cordia founder Mitch Weintraub, recognized last night by the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce. See more below.

We trudged through the rain today to join more than 400 at the Fairview Marriott for the Helios HR Apollo Awards, which honor companies that promote employee development.

Helios CEO Kathy Albarado and Sarah Cower. This morning's winners: Arc Aspido, Metier, Beers + Cutler, Edelman, United States Pharmacopeia Convention and B.F. Saul Company Hotel Division. No, Kathy and Sarah's bright attire isn't random: Kathy "encouraged" employees to dress in the company's official color: bright orange.

Holland & Knight's Adam August and Hinge's Jen Sterling offered positive economic news: Adam says the federal M&A market is warming up because lenders are willing to take more risks; Jen tells us she's seeing an increase in marketing budgets: "Marketers are usually the last ones to see the affects of an economic change, so if we're seeing money, that's good for everyone."

Cabot Consultants Gary Roberts and Tom Berray. These guys say their new Dallas office is doing gangbusters, just in time for Gary's annual fishing vacation with a bunch of VCs (this year in Idaho), while Tom has a trip to Florida coming up.

Some HR best practices courtesy of Helios' Lisa Denny:
  • Document career paths and formalize success plans
  • Continue investment in training
  • Use coaching as part of supervisor development
  • Consider multiple channels for training delivery and communication of training opportunities
  • Use incentives and rewards
  • Solicit feedback and measure results

New IAC Executive Committee

IAC announced the election results of its executive committee yesterday. ICF International's Andy Robinson takes over as Vice Chair, while Hobbs and Hobbs' Ira Hobbs, CACI's Dale Luddeke, INDUS's Mike Mullen, and Microsoft's Kim Nelson (pictured with IAC Executive Director Ken Allen) were voted to four at-large positions. Each will serve a two-year term.

50 Years!

The Montgomery Chamber welcomed 700 guests to its 50th annual dinner last night, where PilieroMazza’s Pam Mazza and Cordia’s Mitch Weintraub, right, took home the Chairman’s Award. Also pictured: Chamber EVP Barbara Ashe, Venable’s Rob Burton, Chamber prez Gigi Godwin, Sterling Construction CEO Sterling Crockett, and Lockheed’s John Zuccaro. Congressman Van Hollen even dropped in to receive plaudits as Legislator of the Year.
