We keep hearing the economy is going to turn, but reality says it's still difficult to get capital. Today, we were out in Manassas for one of the down economy's great startup successes, Catch the Wind, which last month netted $20.3M in private placement financing.

That's CEO Phil Rogers, second from left, with execs Claudia Jaques, David Samuels, Daniel Lacroix, and William Fetzer, surrounding the company's Vindicator laser wind sensor. Placed on top of wind turbines, it senses changes in wind direction and speed several hundred yards away, allowing the turbine to adjust for maximum efficiency.

Phil says the money will allow his company to increase qualification testing, field trials, and speed up production. "We hope within a year to be mass producing these for the market," says Phil, who also founded government contractor OADS.

| The Sales Stylist |
| |
Last night, we dropped in on the Women In Technology's Workforce Development Committee to see Jennifer Abernathy, president of The Sales Lounge and a self-described sales stylist. Her message: Very soon more networking will be done online than in person, so whip your online profile into shape on places like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, and include all your online info on your business card, not just your e-mail address.
| |
Another tip: Keep your professional and personal profiles separate using privacy settings, and be careful who you connect with. "If I get a friend request from a guy overseas in a dark room with no shirt on, I'm making sure to reject him," Jennifer says. Oh, and for the record, our tech reporter brought the only Y chromosome to last night's talk, but WIT events are open to the fellas.

Congratulations to our friends at Alion Science and Technology (that's CEO Bahman Atefi and COO Stacey Mendler), which just won a $97M contract to provide technical and media relations support to the Navy Office of Information (i.e. keep media people like us in the know). Delta Resources Inc., The Minor Group and Vox Optima are all subs.
David Stegon will be at the NVTC CFO Awards tonight! Send story ideas and event listings (they start running tomorrow) to David@Bisnow.com
