MAVA Today

Big shout-out to Adoptions Together's Taste of Potomac, Saturday night, May 30. Enjoy the finest fare, libations, and lively music to support the DC area's largest and most comprehensive non-profit adoption agency! Tickets are $100 and available here.

Just a few hours ago, we joined nearly 700 entrepreneurs and VCs at MAVA’s Capital Connection ’09 where we saw start-up CEO's court investors with the awkwardness of an eighth grade dance. (We kid of course, barely.)

Former FCC Chairman Reed Hundt, Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson and Core Capital Partners’ Tom Wheeler. Consensus is that with increased gov’t spending and regulation, Washington has become the new home of technology, with local companies looking to win big. “Don’t underestimate the access you’re given,” Tommy says. “People in congress love to hear from small tech companies thinking they might become the next Google.”

Lately it seems like we’ve seen Federal CIO Vivek Kundra more than his wife and kids. Vivek says the Obama administration plans to invest 3% of GDP in technology R&D to spur the next generation of high-tech innovation. “We’re looking for high-risk high-reward projects like DARPA that can solve the most difficult problems.” Vivek just launched Data.gov that aims to increase public access to government databases. In a week, Vivek says there are 50 data feeds on the site, which is expected to grow into the hundreds of thousands in the next couple months.

Our wide-angle lens doesn’t do justice to the packed house at the Mandarin Oriental in SW.

Marketers extraordinaire: CreatiVerge Communications President Scott Shaw, BoxTone’s Brian Reed, SpeakerBox Communications CEO Elizabeth Shea, Triumphant CMO Jim Ivers and CommuniClique CEO Andy Powers. Brian, Elizabeth and Jim chair the Technology Marketing Alliance that brings together CMOs from high-tech companies in the metro area. Jim tells us Triumphant’s web traffic hit an all-time high last month the day its story was featured in Bisnow. (Those marketing guys always know how to flatter us.)

LucidMedia CEO Ajay Sravanapudi with r2i’s Cheryl Dickison. Ajay tells us his contextual advertising company has a new platform that lets online ad buyers see all the pages their ads are listed on to make sure they’re getting the most bang for their buck. “You could buy ads on Yahoo mail, but it doesn’t do any good if it’s somewhere people won’t see it,” he says. Last time we saw Ajay, he had a knee brace after tearing his ACL playing basketball, but he tells us he’s healed (mostly).

It’s the ZippyJobs guys: Jai Hokimi and Jason Panda. Their start-up helps students find jobs close to campus either in their field of study or to make a few bucks for beer. They now partner with Event Innovation honchos Steve Gilfus (co-founder of Blackboard, where Jai was one of the early employees) and Frank Ganis, who are helping ZippyJobs.com expand its offering to colleges.

At the Access National Bank recent shareholders meeting, we found bank CEO Mike Clarke, right, with Executive Counsel’s Aileen Pisciotta and DubMeNow CEO Manoj Ramnani. Mike tells us Access National banked record profits in ’08 and cites customer service as a reason. Why do we believe him? The testimonials, of course. Manoj’s mobile phone business card company switched from Citi to Access National because “Michael is always there for me.”

David Stegon returns to MAVA tomorrow (briefly) and then is at AFCEA Nova’s Combat IT Day. Send story ideas to David@Bisnow.com
