Great to see all of you this morning at the Tower Club for our Bisnow Breakfast & Schmooze as National Defense University’s Mark Drapeau, Microsoft’s Lewis Shepherd, former DOT CIO Dan Mintz, and former EPA CIO Molly O’Neill talked the latest in Gov 2.0 led by moderator Chris Dorobek.

Don’t Bisnow events look like fun? The shameless answer: Yes! We space the panelists around the room on barstools—and then forget to feed them. They are wonderful people who don’t complain.

Lewis with Chris, who you know as the afternoon drive anchor on Federal News Radio. Lewis says the intelligence community created Intellipedia following 9/11 by lifting open source technology from Wikipedia, but that such a model is obviously not sustainable. Are there business ops? “There is an enormous amount of plumbing that is not completely visible, so the government needs help from system integrators as this goes forward,” Lewis says. Chris has helpfully provided “liner notes” for today’s event.

Dan, who is now a CTO at CSC, says Web 2.0 technology can transform government, but there is no inherent reason for that to happen. “It’s possible that we could have Wiki stovepipes or have this great geospatial information,” but have it in different places that aren’t connected, he said. Cisco’s Alan Balutis challenged the panel about whether Gov 2.0 buzz amounts to real activity and spending or just “passionate lip service,” but most seemed to allow that important movements take time to gather force.

Mark Drapeau, second from right, with DubMeNow CEO Manoj Ramnani, Searchles CEO Elias Shams, and Superian Consulting CEO Chris Brison. Manoj tells us his mobile business card company inked a deal with LinkedIn, so when people connect using his service they can automatically add each other to their LinkedIn profiles.

| Saturday With Vivek! |
| |
What’s this you say? It’s our car’s clock showing that we were in fact up early on Saturday morning along with 250 other loons as the NVTC hosted Federal CIO Vivek Kundra at the Tysons’ Ritz. Is this guy getting overexposed? Evidently not.
| |
Some people wore shorts, others followed the NVTC’s advice to wear jeans, but Vivek looked the part of the national policymaker he’s now become. He told the crowd he wants to “webify” the government’s institutions. “We need to rethink how we reach the American people to provide services in their daily lives using the tools they are familiar with.”
