A CTO
Called Wanda

Invitation to all Bisnow readers! Come join us at the very cool Lima Restaurant & Lounge this Thursday, Mar 19th, 6:00 PM - 2:00 AM to celebrate Lima's 3rd anniversary at 1401 K St NW. This special event is by invitation only, so you must RSVP here.

Fairfax County CTO Wanda Gibson has so many cool projects going on it's hard to know where to start: She's replacing the county's legacy financial and HR systems, installing an interoperable multi-public safety agency 911 call center, increasing employee mobility, and creating state-of-the-art courtrooms.

Wanda tells us she's working with the county office of public affairs to use more social networking tools and creating destinations like MyFairfax and FairfaxTube. "The county administration's goal always was to create a government without walls, doors or clocks, and with the nation's highest median income our residents have come to expect that," Wanda says.

A fourth-generation Washingtonian, Wanda started her IT career in Bell's government division after graduate school at Howard where she was recruited to become the school's first executive director of technology before coming to Fairfax in '96. Wanda spends her few off hours with family, formerly owning several race horses with her brother-in-law and now cheering on her nephew, Charlie Parker, who plays in the NBA Developmental League.

35 Under 35 Update

We caught up with Platinum Solutions' co-founders (and happily married couple) Laila and Adam Rossi, who graced these pages last year in our salute to the Top 35 Entrepreneurs Under 35 in the D.C. region. The duo says their 105-person custom software development firm celebrates its 10-year anniversary this year. "Half of what we do is James Bond software development for the Feds and the other half is traditional enterprise," says Adam, noting the company has created software that can tell the type of bomb from looking at part of the schematics.

Adam and Laila, showing off the Rock Band studio in the company's Reston office, met the first day in grad school at Virginia Tech and got married just before graduation. They moved to the D.C. area to work for systems integrators before starting the company. The two keep busy with the company and two kids, but try to keep work fun, recently showing "Iron Man" and bringing in food following the submission of a big proposal. "We work incredibly hard, but try to keep a family atmosphere," Laila says.

GSA CFO Honored

GSA CFO Kathleen Turco, here with Acting GSA Administrator Paul Prouty, was recently honored as the winner of the Donald L Scantlebury Memorial Award earlier this month at the Federal Financial Management Conference. The award is the highest recognition given to government executives who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and significant improvements in financial management in the public sector. Congrats, Kathleen; we wish you could run the country's banking system, too.
