Gary Sounds Off

We were on hand this morning at the NVTC Titans Breakfast, as Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro chastised Congress and the Prez for spending and bailouts that will saddle future generations with untold debt. "The government's reaction now could threaten our way of life so our children can't get a house or a small business loan, and the next Bill Gates won't get funding."

Gary said the government needs to let companies fail, because failure spurs innovation. He also called for opposition to "card check" that lets employees form a union without secret ballot. "This will create a world where the government will come in and dictate how much people are paid, how much they work, and when they can go to the bathroom. It goes against what an agile technology company needs to be successful."

Gary told 500 at the Reston Hyatt that the government should also ease visas on immigrants who come to the US to start businesses, citing former NVTC chair Sudhakar Shenoy as a prime example. Before he made everyone cry, Gary made everyone laugh with his Yoostar video where he inserted himself into classic movie scenes. You can check it out here.

McLean Capital's Dendy Young, Internet co-founder (and CEO of the Corporation for National Research Initiatives) Bob Kahn, and Sun's Chris Blake. Bob tells us his non-profit just added American Medical Informatics Association CEO Don Detmer to his board of directors. A big golf fan, Bob says he's watching Tiger Woods return from knee surgery and waiting for The Masters.

Virginia State Senator Janet Howell and Dean of GMU's Volgenau School of IT & Engineering Lloyd Griffiths. Janet says the stimulus package helped the state avoid major cuts to education, something Lloyd knows too well (though he says applications at GMU). Sadly, the Patriots probably won't make the NCAA Tournament, but Lloyd is still happy riding his Harley.

LexisNexis VP Sally Vogel, Cabot Consulting Managing Parter Tom Berray (who looks 7-feet tall) and DC Rainmakers president Nancy McCarthy. Tom tells us Cabot just opened a new office in Dallas, but he's heading to Vail tomorrow for some skiing.

Albo & Oblon Managing Partner Seth Berenzweig and Transformation Systems Incorporated CEO M.C. Wilson. M.C. tells us her company is busy helping the Marines deploy MRAP vehicles to soldiers in theater; she also just released her fourth book, "Leaders in Motion." Seth tells us his firm helps keep tech CEOs out of hot water (that's good.)

Broad Street Realty's David Krucoff, INPUT's Steve Trumpet and CSC's Susan Pullin. Steve tells us INPUT is still plowing through the stimulus package while Susan is thankful to be working in technology. "The economy is tough, but almost everyone realizes the value of technology, so they usually find other things to cut."
