Yesterday we were at the Arlington offices of Qwest to hear GSA Federal Acquisition Service CIO Ed O’Hare tell members of IAC about the challenges the agency faced in heading the presidential transition: “We had 77 days to help the new Administration ready itself to run the entire government, so we tried to handle every logistical aspect to let them focus on their mission.”

Ed says GSA provided help desk support from “hour one of day one” that meant everything from IT support to chartering a jet for the President-elect to Chicago. One of the biggest problems the agency faced was clearing transitional employees with HSPD-12. “In a best case scenario it takes 10 days,” says Ed, noting GSA created a separate domain for these employees so they had access only to relevant GSA material.

Yesterday we also swung by the George Mason Bootcamp for Growing Companies & Entrepreneurs at the McLean Hilton to see former Sourcefire CEO Wayne Jackson and GMU’s Jody Costello. Wayne, who sold his company for $350 million in ’07, told the lunchtime audience to find ways to thrive instead of just survive during tough economic times. “One way is to look for great talent at struggling companies and build a management team that could be CEOs in a better market,” Wayne says.

Cyndi Radke heads up sales at SwiftMD, a virtual telemedicine start up that empowers patients with 24/7 access to board certified and trained ER doctors by phone or over the Net. SwiftMD physicians can diagnose, treat and even prescribe medications. “If my son gets a bad cut at a soccer game, I can send a picture from my camera phone to a doctor who can tell me the best thing to do,” says Cyndi, one of the first employees at CareerBuilder.com, who met SwiftMD founder Elliot Justin on a train ride from New York.

Cyndi, who works from her Arlington home, says the pay-per-consultation service is great for consumers, businesses and even those without insurance who want convenience and on-demand access to top quality medical attention and treatment. “It’s a huge cost saver, because there a lot of ailments that don’t require a visit to a doctor’s office or the ER, but still need to be treated,” she says. SwiftMD will be fully licensed in Virginia soon. Cyndi and her husband are busy building a vacation home in West Virginia, meaning she’s elbow-deep in paint samples.

Wednesday night we caught up with our friend Linda Mathes, who’s run the National Capital Area of the American Red Cross for 17 years. She tells us Microsoft’s Teresa Carlson and CSC’s Jim Scheaffer will be chairing the annual gala this fall. Hey, we know that’s far ahead, but in this economy we want you to start planning! Please see www.redcrossnca.org.
