PEAK PERFORMANCE
| |
| We’ve heard litigating a major case be compared to a marathon before, but when Wiley Rein’s Evan Corcoran tells us it’s actually more like climbing a mountain, something makes us believe him. |
| |
Oh yeah, he would know. Several weeks ago, he and a few buddies from his rowing days at Princeton proved their mettle by making it to the top of Argentina’s Aconcagua mountain (elevation: 22,841 ft), the world’s tallest peak outside of the Himalayas. That his firm let him take nearly a month off for the expedition may be equally impressive.

Yesterday, we snapped Evan in his office (elevation: 90 ft above K St), where his mountaineering mentality was focused on discovery in major litigation pending before the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals. He’s representing Computer Sciences Corporation in a case against the Army; CSC is demanding compensation for allegedly unpaid services it provided as part of the next-gen upgrade it administered to the Army’s logistics systems. Evan tells us that it’s the largest dollar-amount case ($700 million) to be tried in the ASBCA.

PREPPING THE SEC’S NEXT-GEN
| |
Last week, Catholic University Law, in partnership with the SEC, hosted a symposium for area law students aimed at enhancing diversity within the securities and financial services industry. In attendance were emissaries from DLA, Patton Boggs, WilmerHale, Dechert, Reed Smith, Goodwin Procter, Bingham McCutchen, Baker Botts, Arent Fox, and others. Here’s director of Catholic U. Law School’s securities regulation program, David Lipton, getting the scoop from SEC Commissioner Elisse Walter, who spoke about opportunities for minority students, as well as strategies for pursuing those positions.

Patton Boggs of counsel Todd Cranford, whose interest in this field began as an attorney in the SEC’s enforcement division, lamented that the securities regulation bar is not often marketed as a viable career path for minorities: "It has saddened me for 16 years that so few people in the financial services industry look like me." Todd, who tells us that he’s been helping clients have a say in recent financial markets regulatory reform, praised symposiums like this one.

| MEET OUR SPONSOR: agencyQ |
| |
| Wouldn’t it be great if social networks, instead of distracting employees and sapping productivity, made your firm more powerful? Enter our great sponsor: agencyQ, which, although it sounds like something out of an Ian Fleming novel, is actually a powerful tool. Think of it as Facebook for your firm, except all the features (mentoring, event updates) bring together all generations. AgencyQ’s chief architect, Greg Nelson (above), tells us that his group’s innovative platform, tailored to every firm, is especially useful for acculturating summer associates and keeping alumni faithful. A number of leading DC firms have already gotten with the program, which agencyQ launched last week; if yours isn’t one of them, check out its website. After all, you only live twice. (For the Bond fans who got that: You’re welcome.) |
