GOURMET’S GUIDE TO HEALTHCARE

Following the market? Get some tips on opportunities to be found in small cap stocks. It's another great economic breakfast briefing from Cardinal Bank, featuring Glenmede Investment Management's Robert Mancuso. Dec 8, 8am. Info

Arent Fox’s Larri Short is in the crux of the healthcare debate, from her view in the health law and life science group. Accordingly, we were not surprised when, upon entering her office last Friday, we found actual printed copies of the House and Senate versions of healthcare legislation stacked neatly atop her desk.

No, this isn’t an ad for furniture, despite that table showing its strength. Looking past the pork, Larri says the bills are primarily about three things: insurance reform, the beginnings of some form of cost containment mechanisms, and the question of who's going to pay for health coverage. She tells us the latter is the biggest concern to her clients, mostly pharma and medical device manufacturers. That’s why she’s cutting straight to the Medicare and Medicaid portions of the bills, and saving the rest for Thanksgiving weekend.

Speaking of leftovers, Larri tells us that she and her husband rarely had any during the culinary tour of northern Spain they took last month, following the route of the famed Camino de Santiago de Compostella.

Three New Partners!

At Gibson Dunn, Geoffrey Sigler, Elizabeth Ising, and Benjamin Rippeon

Earlier today, we stopped by Gibson Dunn to meet Geoffrey Sigler, Elizabeth Ising, and Benjamin Rippeon, newly-minted partners. Geoffrey, who specializes in healthcare litigation (Aetna’s a client), tells us that he’s the proud father of a newborn son. Elizabeth, a corporate securities lawyer, says she’s tracking possible congressional action and impending SEC rules relating to exec compensation and corporate governance (and recovering from a hard-fought soccer match on Sunday). Benjamin is an expert in transactional tax issues relating to corporate mergers and acquisitions and the formation and operation of partnerships. He’s been working on tax issues for Watson Wyatt relating to a proposed merger of equals with TowersPerrin.

Akin Gump’s Charlie Johnson organizing clothes for Gifts for the Homeless

Late last week, we found Akin Gump’s Charlie Johnson, partner in the firm’s public law and policy practice, lobbying his fellow attorneys to donate unwanted clothes (as well as cash) to the city-wide Gifts for the Homeless campaign. As the program’s lead coordinator at his firm, Charlie tells us he hopes to have this room we snapped him in (#303), filled with clothes by the Dec 3 deadline.
