NWLC Awards Dinner

Early bird pricing ends today for our New Washington VI: Carlyle Group founder David Rubenstein, forecaster Steve Fuller, and others, Dec 7 at the Reagan Building. More info

Last night, the National Women’s Law Center used its awards dinner at the Washington Hilton to honor FDIC chair Sheila Bair and CFTC chair Brooksley Born, both known for issuing unheeded early warnings of impending financial disaster. Sheila was one of the first people to sense foul play at Enron, and Brooksley derided derivatives before almost anyone knew what they were.

Dir. of UMD Law’s Center for Health and Homeland Security Michael Greenberger with Brooksley Born

We snapped Dir. of UMD Law’s Center for Health and Homeland Security Michael Greenberger with Brooksley minutes before she delivered remarks. Brooksley, who was first in her Stanford Law class, said that she's always regarded the legal profession and public service to be noble callings, and that she felt lucky to have worked for a law firm that shared those values (Arnold & Porter). Thanks to his health law expertise, Michael confirmed one of the NWLC’s main messages: “Being a woman is not a pre-existing condition.”

ABA Prez Carolyn Lamm, the Berstein Law Firm’s Caryl Bernstein, and NWLC co-prez Marcia Greenberger.

We found these three pioneers discussing the NWLC’s most recent milestone, this year’s passage of the landmark Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act: ABA Prez Carolyn Lamm, the Bernstein Law Firm’s Caryl Bernstein, and NWLC co-prez Marcia Greenberger.

FDIC chair Ricki Helfer (with the cool specs), WilmerHale’s Reg Brown and wife Tiffeny Sanchez, and A&P’s Larry Schneider

We snapped former FDIC chair Ricki Helfer (with the cool specs), WilmerHale’s Reg Brown and wife Tiffeny Sanchez, and A&P’s Larry Schneider. Ricki and her husband Michael are long-time supporters of the Center and bought a table to honor Sheila (her successor at FDIC), as well as Brooksley. Reg was in the White House Counsel’s office in the last administration.

CitiGroup GC Mike Helfer and Covington & Burling’s George Frampton

CitiGroup GC Mike Helfer and Covington & Burling’s George Frampton have been buddies since law school, but last year they were on opposite sides of the table when George, former chair of the White House Council on Environmental Equality, repped Wachovia during its attempted merger with Wells Fargo, a move that Citi opposed. We found the old pals back together, having a great time.

Trade guru Sue Esserman, California Congresswoman Jackie Speier, U.S.-India Business Council’s Anku Nath, and Sue’s husband, Crowell & Moring’s Andy Marks

Trade guru Sue Esserman, California Congresswoman Jackie Speier, US-India Business Council’s Anku Nath, and Sue’s husband, Crowell & Moring’s Andy Marks. Sue, who chairs Steptoe's international department, was Asst Sec of Commerce and the Deputy USTR. We were excited to learn that Sue and Andy’s son, a Harvard, senior, is the editor of the Crimson; we’ve identified our next recruit.

Steptoe & Johnson immigration practice head Lynda Zengerle

After hearing DHS Sec. Janet Napolitano predict last week a push for comprehensive immigration reform by 2010, we decided to consult with Steptoe & Johnson immigration practice head Lynda Zengerle (a first generation American and grandmother of two). The debate over immigration reform, Lynda reminds us, cuts to the very core of our national identity, and boils down to a simple choice: do we remain a melting pot, or pull up the proverbial ladder?

Steptoe & Johnson immigration practice head Lynda Zengerle

Lynda favors the former (not the ladder), and tells us that “immigration reform is going to be every bit as challenging and emotional as healthcare reform.” Lynda tells us our current “denial based system” is leading to missed opportunities. Case in point: a Chinese client recently wanted to foot the bill for a lavish corporate retreat in Vegas, but he and his employees were denied access. The result? No American adventure, and Nevada missed out on what could have been a handsome lot of tax revenues.
