| After 13 years as Assistant to the Solicitor General, Lisa Blatt has joined Arnold & Porter. In addition to reorganizing how the firm manages its appellate work across practice groups, Lisa tells us she'll help prepare colleagues to deliver “complex arguments to generalist judges.” |

We snapped this yesterday at A&P HQ. That goal demands understanding practical aspects (as well as legal principles) of cases, she tells us. The classic example, according to a SCOTUS guide for oral argument, was a case Lisa argued regarding the constitutionality of border patrol officers randomly searching the gas tanks of people's cars. Lisa enlisted mechanics to teach her how to disassemble and repair a gas tank, and thereby achieved, according to the SCOTUS website, a “total grasp” of the case.

In addition to several cute family pictures and a miniature cow, we spy at least 29 things you need to notice in this shot we snapped of Lisa in her new office. The first is a miniature flag from her beloved home state, Texas; next, there are the 28 quill feathers that Lisa has received for each time she’s argued before the highest court. That’s more quills than any other woman in active practice, and 27 of them have been presented to her after she won.

| WOMEN UNITED |

 |
| We were humbled yesterday morning to present a Bisnow Breakfast & Schmooze on the status of women executives—that turned into a truly memorable event and drew 450 business women. Even the huge Sequoia restauarnt was barely able to contain the numbers and passion. "Where do Women Stand" (the title for the morning) and five great panelists clearly struck a chord. |

Katten’s Rori Malech, who moderated, cited stats that show women comprise 47% of law students, but only 34% of practicing lawyers and less than 16% of capital partners and 6% of managing partners. She runs her firms Women’s Leadership Forum to try to increase retention and advancement of women attorneys.

We put on our thinking caps Tuesday night at Kirkland & Ellis for the 3rd annual Lawyers for Literacy Trivia Challenge hosted by Everybody Wins DC. A dozen teams comprised of smarty-pants lawyers from DC firms and corporate law departments duked it out over a plentiful supply of libations and bar food. Here’s Everybody Wins exec. director Mary Salander, Kirkland’s Mark Young, and White & Case’s Yael Krigman. A derivatives lawyer, Mark tells us he’s had more work than ever over the past year; but he still volunteers with Everybody Wins once a week, reading to children at DC public schools.

The most “trivial” team in town? This year, the sought after title went to Troutman Sanders.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the champs: Troutman's Molly Thacher, Mary Hodgins, Whitney Lindahl, Jeffery Orenstiem, Carrie Collier-Brown, and Daniel “AC Slater” Archuleta. Jeffery, the team’s captain, tells us he’s happy with the win and training for next year’s tourney will commence after New Year’s.
