| On the Hill yesterday, we talked criminal justice forensics (thus, our headline) with Sam Ramer, counsel to the Senate Judiciary. As a special DoJ detailee, Sam uses his criminal justice expertise to help ranking minority member, Sen. Jeff Sessions, and other committee members make well-informed decisions. |
| |
Sam's been a NYC prosecutor and Asst. US Attorney in DC handling homicides. An example of what he's doing now is evaluating a proposed National Crime Commission that would examine the need for “top-to-bottom reform” of our criminal justice system. Should it become reality, he says it'd be the first such a commission since the 1960s. (Would that make it retro?)

The network of stately hallways (to say nothing of the Senate cafeteria’s dessert corner) are a far cry from the South Bronx projects where he grew up. While Sam tells us that tensions often flare on Thursdays during the committee’s regularly-scheduled markup sessions, he describes the everyday interactions he has with his Democratic counterparts as “extremely professional.” We believe him; but then again, we’re also aware that Sam is someone who barely bats an eyelash at gangs and murderers.

INSURANCE AGENT
| |
We stopped by Mayer Brown’s brand new digs yesterday to chat with its latest hire, Fred Reinke. He works closely with European insurance companies (he's fluent in German) and was also involved with insurance matters relating to two iconic events this decade: 9/11 and Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme. He represented French insurance giant SCOR in a property dispute over how much insurance recovery was due to World Trade Center owner Larry Silverstein, and also several Lloyd’s syndicates involved in the 10,000 lawsuits for respiratory injuries pending against New York City; he’s also helping investors who lost money by indirectly (and in some cases unknowingly) investing with Madoff via third party feeder funds.

Here’s Fred in the firm’s stylish moot court room, sure to be a favorite hangout. In the past year, he’s delivered two circuit court appeals arguments. A tennis enthusiast, Fred got to hit with some of the top contenders at last summer’s Legg Mason tournament.

ATLANTA MAN
| |
Last night, prominent partners and power players from DC’s African-American community gathered at Reed Smith‘s penthouse to raise funds for Atlanta mayoral candidate Kasim Reed, whose heads into a runoff election on Dec. 1st. We snapped Kasim flanked by several host committee members: Beveridge & Diamond’s Benjamin Wilson (also Kasim’s cousin), Reed Smith’s A. Scott Bolden, DC Councilwoman Yvette Alexander, and Patton Boggs’ Catherine Buell, who tells us she worked as a LA for Kasim when he was a senator in Georgia’s General Assembly.

As they say down south: “a friend in need is a friend indeed.” That’s why Florida Congressman (and senatorial candidate) Kendrick Meek showed up to present Kasim with a $1000 campaign contribution.
